Director of Enterprise Payroll

Position Overview
The Director, Enterprise Payroll will lead and optimize payroll operations across multiple entities and U.S. states, ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely payroll delivery. This role is responsible for developing payroll strategy, maintaining strong controls and audit readiness, driving Workday Payroll implementations and ongoing system optimization, and partnering with HR, Finance and business leaders to support growth and change. The ideal candidate brings deep enterprise payroll expertise, proven leadership, and experience managing complex, multi-entity and multi-state payroll environments; experience in the entertainment industry is a plus.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and manage the enterprise payroll team, setting priorities, developing talent, and ensuring consistent operational excellence across multiple legal entities and payroll locations.
Own payroll strategy, governance and controls, including SOX compliance, audit readiness, policy development, and continuous process improvement.
Oversee end-to-end payroll operations for multiple entities and states, ensuring timely and accurate payroll processing, tax withholding, reporting, and year-end activities.
Serve as the Workday Payroll subject matter expert: lead implementations, configuration, upgrades, integrations, testing, and ongoing optimization to maximize system capability.
Partner closely with HR, Finance, Tax, Legal and business leaders to align payroll processes with business needs, M&A activity, and organizational change.
Manage relationships with external vendors and third-party providers (payroll processors, tax filing agents, benefits vendors), negotiating SLAs and ensuring high service levels.
Develop and deliver payroll reporting and KPI dashboards for executive leadership, highlighting risks, trends, and opportunities for cost or efficiency improvements.
Ensure compliance with federal, state and local payroll, tax and labor regulations across all jurisdictions, monitoring legislative changes and implementing necessary process updates.
Drive automation, standardization and scaling initiatives to support growth, complexity and multi-entity operations while maintaining data security and confidentiality.
Lead payroll-related projects, including system migrations, cross-functional integrations, and remediation activities, managing timelines, budgets and stakeholder communication.

Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources or related field; advanced degree or relevant certifications (e.g., CPP, PHR/SPHR) preferred.
10+ years of progressive payroll experience with at least 5 years in a leadership role managing enterprise or multi-entity payroll operations.
Demonstrated hands-on experience with Workday Payrollimplementation, configuration, integrations, testing and optimization.
Proven experience managing payroll across multiple legal entities and multiple U.S. states, with strong knowledge of federal, state and local tax and labor regulations.
Strong understanding of payroll controls, SOX requirements, audit processes and remediation.
Experience with payroll systems, integrations (payroll-to-ledger, time & attendance, benefits), and vendor management.
Excellent leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills, with experience presenting to executive leadership and partnering across HR and Finance functions.
Analytical mindset with experience driving process improvements, automation and reporting using payroll data and KPIs.
Experience in the entertainment industry is a plus, particularly familiarity with industry-specific payroll practices (e.g., union rules, residuals/royalties, contract talent payments).
Willingness to travel as needed and to support global or business-critical payroll events outside normal business hours when required.
