We are seeking a reliable, detail-oriented Primate Diet Prep Technician to assist with the preparation of produce and other diet components required for the daily diets of a variety of primate species.
The primary focus of this position is preparation of produce and other dietary components. The technician will prepare fruits, vegetables, and other diet components according to established recipes, quantities, schedules, and species-specific dietary instructions. Accuracy, cleanliness, food safety, and attention to detail are essential, as different primate species may require different ingredients, preparation methods, chop sizes and have specific allergies or dietary requirements.
The position reports directly to the Nutrition and Produce Manager.
Responsibilities
- Wash and thoroughly inspect fruits and vegetables for quality before preparation.
- Peel, core, trim, and prepare produce as required.
- **Chop fruits and vegetables into a variety of sizes **according to the dietary requirements of different primate species.
- Prepare specialized diet items and recipes, including soups and other cooked diet components.
- Soak biscuits according to established preparation instructions.
- Maintain proper separation, handling, storage, and labeling of food items when required for dietary restrictions or allergies.
- Follow all established food-safety, sanitation, and hygiene procedures.
- Take appropriate precautions to prevent cross-contact between ingredients, particularly when preparing diets for animals with known allergies or dietary sensitivities.
- Properly clean and sanitize preparation surfaces, knives, cutting boards, containers, utensils, and equipment.
- Maintain an organized and sanitary food-preparation area throughout the work period.
- Monitor produce and diet supplies and report quality concerns, shortages, or unusual conditions to the Nutrition and Produce Manager.
- Minimize food waste while maintaining required diet quantities and preparation standards.
- Work efficiently while maintaining accuracy and consistency.
- Perform other diet-preparation and related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Reliable and able to consistently work every Sunday and Wednesday morning.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Comfortable performing repetitive food-preparation tasks.
- Able to recognize and follow different preparation requirements for different primate species.
- Strong commitment to cleanliness, sanitation, food safety, and prevention of dietary cross-contact.
- Able to carefully follow instructions regarding allergies and individual dietary restrictions.
- Able to work independently and efficiently once trained.
- Previous experience with produce preparation, food service, kitchen work, animal care, zoo, sanctuary, or similar environments is helpful but not required.
- Must be comfortable working in an animal-care facility and around primates.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and work for the duration of a 4- to 5-hour shift.
- Ability to perform repetitive chopping, cutting, peeling, washing, and other food-preparation tasks.
- Ability to safely handle kitchen equipment, produce, containers, and diet-preparation supplies.
- Ability to lift and carry food items and supplies as required for the position.
Schedule
Every Sunday and Wednesday
Approximately 4–5 hours per shift
Approximately 8–10 hours per week
Consistent attendance is an important requirement of this position because primate diets must be prepared according to a regular schedule.
Compensation
Minimum wage, in accordance with applicable requirements.
