As our business continues to grow, we're looking for an Assistant Store Manager who will become a key member of our leadership team. This individual will partner directly with the owner to oversee daily operations, create an exceptional customer experience, curate beautiful merchandising displays, support marketing initiatives, and help grow one of Downtown Frederick's most distinctive lifestyle boutiques.

Position Summary
The Assistant Store Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operation of Hearth & Home Mercantile during scheduled shifts. This role ensures our store runs smoothly while delivering an elevated customer experience and maintaining the high standards our brand is known for.
The ideal candidate is highly organized, dependable, proactive, and passionate about interior design, antiques, merchandising, and small business. This person enjoys taking ownership, solving problems independently, and creating beautiful spaces that inspire our customers.
Key ResponsibilitiesStore Leadership & Operations
- Independently open and close the store following all operational procedures.
- Ensure the store is beautifully presented and ready for customers each day.
- Deliver exceptional customer service while building lasting customer relationships.
- Process sales accurately using Shopify POS.
- Receive, tag, organize, and stock new merchandise.
- Maintain inventory organization and operational efficiency.
- Identify opportunities to improve store operations and customer experience.
- Assist in hiring, training and supporting future sales associates as the business grows.
Merchandising & Visual Display
- Curate and refresh product displays throughout the store.
- Merchandise furniture, antiques, seasonal collections, and home décor.
- Create inspiring vignettes that encourage customer engagement and increase sales.
- Maintain Hearth & Home Mercantile's visual standards and aesthetic.
- Assist with seasonal floor resets and collection launches.
Operations & Administration
- Manage online order fulfillment from start to finish.
- Pick, pack, and ship customer orders with care and attention to detail.
- Monitor the business email inbox and respond professionally to customer inquiries.
- Coordinate customer pickups and special orders.
- Maintain organized operational systems and administrative processes.
- Assist with inventory counts and product management.
Marketing & Brand Support
- Photograph new merchandise for social media and Shopify.
- Assist with social media content creation and stories.
- Help merchandise products online.
- Support email marketing campaigns and promotional events.
- Assist with workshops, seasonal events, and in-store experiences.

Preferred Qualifications
- 2+ years of retail leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
- Experience with visual merchandising or interior design.
- Shopify POS and Shopify ecommerce experience preferred.
- Administrative or office management experience.
- Social media or marketing experience.
- Photography or content creation skills.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities.
- Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities while maintaining a calm, positive attitude.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and move up to 40 pounds.
- Comfortable moving furniture and large merchandise.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Comfortable climbing ladders while styling displays.
Schedule & Availability
This position is expected to become a cornerstone of our retail operations and requires flexibility to support the needs of a growing small business.
Typical Schedule
- Wednesday through Sunday
- Approximately 20-40 hours per week (with extended hours during events and holidays)
Requirements
- Weekend availability is required.
- Availability to work later hours (6pm onward).
- Availability to work extended retail hours during the holiday season (October–December).
- Flexibility to work additional hours during seasonal promotions and special events.
- Availability to participate in 2–4 off-site markets and vendor events each year, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and multi-day events.
- Reliable transportation for local travel to markets and events.
