Since 1989, we have relied on passionate volunteers and community engagement to fulfill our mission of ensuring quality care for horses in need.

Overview
Help Build the Volunteer Community Behind One of the Nation's Leading Equine Welfare Organizations

Days End Farm Horse Rescue (DEFHR) is seeking a highly organized, people-oriented Volunteer Coordinator to lead and grow one of our most important organizational resources—our volunteers.

This is not a desk-only volunteer administration position. The Volunteer Coordinator is a highly visible member of the DEFHR team who builds relationships, welcomes new volunteers into the organization, coordinates training and scheduling, supports volunteers throughout their experience, and works closely with staff across the organization to ensure volunteers are meaningfully and effectively engaged.

We are looking for someone who genuinely likes people, understands horses, takes initiative, and can bring organization and consistency to a dynamic environment without needing constant direction.

DEFHR is entering an exciting period of organizational growth, including expanded educational and community programming and the development of our new Equine Discovery Center. The Volunteer Coordinator will have an opportunity to strengthen an established volunteer program while helping build the systems and volunteer capacity needed for DEFHR's next chapter.

What You'll Do

You'll serve as the primary point of connection for DEFHR's volunteer community and coordinate the day-to-day volunteer program, including:

Recruit, interview, onboard, orient, schedule, engage, and retain volunteers.
Create a welcoming and mission-driven experience for prospective and current volunteers.
Coordinate volunteer training and continuing education in partnership with DEFHR staff and subject-matter experts.
Work closely with our Equine Services team to ensure volunteers working with horses receive appropriate hands-on instruction, coaching, supervision, and safety training.
Match volunteer interests, skills, and availability with needs across the organization.
Recruit and support volunteer mentors who assist with onboarding and skill development.
Coordinate volunteer groups, corporate service days, school groups, and community-service activities.
Maintain volunteer records, certifications, waivers, schedules, participation history, and hours.
Communicate opportunities, organizational updates, and program information to volunteers.
Develop and maintain volunteer procedures, training resources, and operational systems.
Coordinate volunteer appreciation, recognition, and engagement activities.
Lead public tours and serve as a welcoming representative of DEFHR to visitors and the community.
Support volunteers involved in education, events, fundraising, facilities, outreach, horse care, and other organizational activities.
Evaluate volunteer participation and feedback and identify opportunities to strengthen the program as DEFHR grows.

Who We're Looking For

This role requires someone who can balance people and organization.

You should be the kind of person who notices what needs to happen, establishes priorities, and gets things moving—while also knowing when to ask questions, seek support, or involve leadership.

Just as importantly, you should enjoy working with people. Our volunteers bring different ages, backgrounds, personalities, abilities, and levels of horse experience. The right person will be approachable, patient, encouraging, comfortable setting expectations, and capable of building relationships while maintaining accountability.

Experience Required:

At least three years of experience in volunteer coordination, community engagement, education programs, nonprofit operations, or a related field.
Demonstrated horse-handling experience and a solid understanding of equine behavior, safety, and basic horsemanship.
Confidence working around horses and supporting volunteers learning safe horse-handling and barn procedures.
Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organization, time management, and ability to independently prioritize competing responsibilities.
Sound judgment and the ability to solve routine problems independently while recognizing when leadership involvement is needed.
Ability to work collaboratively with staff across multiple departments.
Comfort using technology and learning volunteer-management, CRM, database, and scheduling systems.

Experience developing training materials, educational resources, presentations, or structured learning opportunities is a plus.
