The City of Galesburg seeks qualified applicants to fill part-time Swim Instructor positions in the Department of Parks and Recreation. Employees work a varied schedule during the week and are paid $17.00-$18.00 per hour depending on qualifications.
There are no benefits associated with this position.
Working with our department is focused on safety, customer service & fun! Swim lessons are a key component of the 5 links of drowning prevention. Instructors will be given access to training and resources from the American Red Cross on how best to teach swim lessons. Instructors will maintain the safety of all students while engaging them in fun methods of learning swim lessons. Both group and individual lessons will be taught.
Can't work the full summer? Our seasonal commitments are flexible if you communicate your needs ahead of time. We hope to have you for 10-20 hours a week from Memorial Day weekend through 8/31/2025, with 2-3 weeks of time off for your social commitments. If you need more time off, have sports schedules to work around, or need to start/end at a different time that may be possible.
Essential Duties of the Position
- Responsible for the overall safety of patrons while in swim lesson program
- Enforces rules and regulations, prevents accidents, and responds to emergencies as they arise
- Creates lessons plans compliant with ARC teaching standards and teaches to their lesson plans
- Completes report cards for each participant each session
- Works with the participants to achieve individual goals and objectives while working towards the overall level goals of the lesson group
- Communicates with swimmers and parents
- Provides constructive feedback for participants during lessons
- Fills full instructional time with activities that are directly related to skills being taught
- Manages classes of 1-8 participants, maintaining class safety, student engagement, and ARC swim lesson standards
- Performs daily duties to include: completing necessary reports, recordkeeping, cleaning, and other duties as may be assigned
Minimum Requirements
- Applicants must be 15 years of age or older
- 15-year-old applicants must have a workers permit prior to beginning work
- Applicants must be able to swim: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and sidestroke.
- CPR Certification within 30 days of hire
- Must pass a pre-employment background check
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen

- Read, interpret and apply policies and procedures
- Comply with all City and Departmental safety rules and policies
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with the public and co-workers
- Perform moderate recreational activity in an outdoor environment
- Maintain physical, mental, and emotional fitness to demonstrate all swim skills
Ideal Requirements
Any candidates with the following qualifications will be considered for additional job duties such as lifeguard, games leaders, swim team coach, and leadership positions.
- Water Safety Instructor certification
- Lifeguard certification
- Experience as a competitive swimmer
- Experience or training as a teacher
- Experience or training as a swim coach
