Position Summary
The ES Welder – Combination is responsible for performing a wide range of production and repair welding operations in support of Engineered Systems manufacturing activities. This position performs arc, acetylene, MIG, spot welding, brazing, and soldering on new and existing structures, fabrications, and components, including items subject to vibration and high-pressure service. Work is performed from work orders, blueprints, specifications, and instructions to meet production, quality, and safety requirements.
Because this role involves the operation of welding equipment, hoists, forklifts, and other powered industrial equipment, it is classified as a safety-critical position while performing those duties. The ES Welder – Combination must operate equipment safely, maintain situational awareness, and comply with all company safety policies and OSHA regulations to prevent injury, equipment damage, or product defects.
Essential Functions and Basic Duties
1. Welding & Fabrication Operations
- Perform arc, acetylene, MIG, TIG, spot welding, brazing, and soldering operations on a variety of Engineered Systems parts, assemblies, and fabrications.
- Work from work orders, blueprints, specifications, samples, and written or verbal instructions to complete welding assignments accurately.
- Perform production welding, maintenance welding, and repair of castings and components, including building up material for further machining.
- Weld components requiring mechanical strength and integrity, including items subject to vibration and high-pressure service.
- Avoid distortion, burning, or improper fusion of metals, including dissimilar materials.
- Spot grind or rough grind welds as required to meet specifications.
- Obtain required approvals for completed work, including work subject to government or customer inspection.
2. Setup, Fit-Up & Assembly
- Make required welding setups independently, including positioning and securing materials.
- Assemble standardized products and weldments using angle, channel, bar stock, and multiple components.
- Use scales, squares, clamps, jigs, fixtures, and other holding devices to ensure proper fit and alignment.
- Fit, adjust, and assemble components to maintain dimensional accuracy and proper weld preparation.
3. Equipment Operation & Material Handling
- Operate welding, brazing, and soldering equipment in accordance with established procedures.
- Select appropriate welding rods, wire, and consumables based on material type and application.
- Regulate current, pressure, and equipment settings to ensure proper penetration, fusion, and bead quality.
- Inspect completed welds to verify conformity to specifications and dimensional requirements.
- Safely operate forklifts, hoists, cranes, and other powered industrial equipment when certified, to move materials, weldments, fixtures, and finished components.
- Occasionally operate shears, punch presses, saws, nibblers, grinders, press brakes, and burn tables as assigned.
4. Quality, Safety & Work Standards
- Perform all welding activities in accordance with company policies, procedures, and quality standards.
- Inspect work for defects and ensure weld quality meets required specifications.
- Detect and report defective materials, faulty equipment, or unusual conditions to supervision promptly.
- Observe all prescribed safety rules and regulations, including proper use of PPE such as welding helmets, gloves, eye protection, respirators, and protective clothing.
- Maintain awareness when working near moving machinery, overhead loads, or powered industrial equipment.
5. Documentation, Housekeeping & Communication
- Accurately record time, production data, and other required documentation.
- Maintain welding equipment, tools, and work areas in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers regarding work progress, issues, or improvement suggestions.
- Assist other departments or personnel as needed to support production and Engineered Systems objectives.
6. Other Duties
- Support special projects, repairs, or fabrication assignments as directed.
- Participate in training or cross-training to enhance job knowledge and versatility.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by supervision.
Education / Certification
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Successful completion of an accredited comprehensive welding training program, including certification under AWS D1.1 and/or ASME Section IX.
Experience
- Minimum of three (3) years of production welding experience, or equivalent combination of experience and welding certification.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of welding techniques, procedures, and applications for structural and pressure-related components.
- Knowledge of proper use, setup, and maintenance of welding and cutting equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and welding symbols.
- Strong attention to detail with a focus on weld quality and dimensional accuracy.
- Ability to pass required job-specific welding and certification tests.
- Effective communication skills and ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
- Ability to safely operate forklifts and powered industrial equipment when certified.
Physical Requirements and Work Conditions
- Physical Demands:
- This position requires sustained physical activity throughout the work shift, including prolonged standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and working in fixed or awkward positions while welding or fabricating components. The employee must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull materials, tools, and components weighing up to 40 pounds occasionally and up to 20 pounds frequently. Manual dexterity and steady hand-eye coordination are required to safely operate welding equipment, tools, and material-handling devices.
- Material Handling & Powered Industrial Equipment:
- The Welder – Combination may be required to safely operate forklifts, hoists, cranes, and other powered industrial equipment when certified, to move raw materials, weldments, fixtures, and finished components. Work requires constant situational awareness when operating or working near powered industrial trucks (PIT), overhead loads, moving machinery, and other personnel in active manufacturing areas.
- Vision & Hearing Requirements:
- Close and distance vision are required to read blueprints, welding symbols, specifications, gauges, and measuring instruments, and to visually inspect weld quality, bead formation, and dimensional accuracy. Adequate hearing is required to detect changes in equipment operation, alarms, warnings, and verbal instructions in a noisy manufacturing environment.
- Work Environment:
- Work is performed in a welding and manufacturing environment with regular exposure to welding arcs, sparks, heat, molten metal, fumes, gases, dust, vibration, and noise. The employee may be exposed to varying indoor and outdoor temperatures, including extreme heat. Exposure to welding fumes and airborne particulates is inherent to the role.
- Safety & Protective Equipment:
- This position involves potentially hazardous conditions including welding operations, electrical current, pressurized systems, sharp edges, moving machinery, overhead loads, and powered industrial equipment. Strict adherence to all company safety policies and OSHA regulations is mandatory. Required personal protective equipment (PPE) includes, but is not limited to, welding helmet, safety glasses, face shields, gloves, flame-resistant clothing, hearing protection, respiratory protection when applicable. Employees must maintain constant awareness of surroundings to prevent injury to themselves or others.Work is performed on a standard production schedule and may require overtime, extended shifts, or weekend work to meet production demands. The position requires sustained physical effort, focus, and precision throughout the shift while maintaining productivity, weld quality, and safety standards.
