(PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU ALREADY HAVE PRIOR FULL-TIME EXPERIENCE ALONG WITH POSSESSING YOUR STATE FIREFIGHTER II CERTIFICATION AND TN BASIC EMT LICENSE, YOU COULD START AS A FIREFIGHTER II - EMT AT THE RATE OF $20.9502 PER HOUR/$61,006.92 PER YEAR VS. $19.5584 PER HOUR/$56,954.04 PER YEAR AS A FIREFIGHTER I - FIRST RESPONDER).

2026 GALLATIN FIRE DEPARTMENT HIRING PROCESS:
- On Tuesday, September 15 at 6:00 pm, we will be conducting a Hiring Process Orientation which is not mandatory. This will be held at City Hall in the Dining Hall which is located in the basement.
- On Friday, September 18th and Saturday, September 19th at 9:00am, we will be conducting the Written Firefighter Exam. This will be held at City Hall in the Dining Hall which is located in the basement. If you already possess the Firefighter II Certification that is IFSAC or PROBOARD and you provide it when asked, you are exempt from the Written Firefighter Exam.
- On Friday, September 18th and Saturday, September 19th we will be conducting the Physical Ability Test (PAT) Practice Session for those that pass the Written test at Fire Station #1 located at 119 Chief Billy Crook Blvd. (Participation is not mandatory but is highly recommended)
- On Friday, September 25th and Saturday, September 26th, we will be conducting the Physical Ability Test (PAT) at Fire Station #1 located at 119 Chief Billy Crook Blvd.
- We will be conducting in person panel interviews for those candidates that successfully pass the Written Firefighter Exam and the Physical Ability Test (PAT) from September 28th - 30th.
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Performs protective service work in fire suppression, emergency medicine, rescue, property conservation, and fire prevention activities. Perform as a first responder to provide basic life support and emergency care to victims of illness or injury.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
1. Participate in fire suppression and rescue activities. Operate pumps, aerial ladders, and other auxiliary fire equipment and apparatus.
2. Participate in fire apparatus operations at scene of fire, lay hose lines, operates nozzle and directs water streams to combat fire. Raise and climb ladders, use portable fire extinguishers, bars, hooks, ropes, and other equipment to suppress and extinguish fires.
3. Perform salvage and overhaul operations, sweeping water, removing debris, and searching for and extinguishing hidden fires.
4. Provide basic life support, within scope of practice, to persons who are sick or injured.
5. Provide fire prevention information to property owners and general public.
6. Participate in required drills, classes, continuing education events and activities as provided by the Fire Department or as directed.
7. Perform regular/routine safety checks and maintenance of firefighting tools, equipment, and apparatus.
8. Perform general maintenance work in the up-keep of fire department buildings and grounds.
9. Regular and predictable attendance.
10. Ability to work in a cooperative manner with others.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATONS:
- High school diploma/GED.
- Successful completion of Fire Recruit School approved by the State of Tennessee
- Must be certified by the Tennessee Commission on Fire Fighting as a Fire Fighter I within 1 year of employment
- Must be, and maintain, a licensed Emergency Medical Responder by the State of Tennessee or obtain within six (6) months of employment.
- Must be certified by the Tennessee Commission on Fire Fighting as a Fire Fighter II within 2 years of employment
- Must be licensed by the State of Tennessee as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic within 2 years of employment.
- Must complete FEMA online courses IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800.
- Must meet and maintain qualifications and training standards as established by the Department and the State of Tennessee.
- Must have a valid driver’s license with “F” endorsement if Tennessee resident or equivalent with out of state driver’s license.
- Must meet physical standards established by the Gallatin Fire Department.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of fire suppression and rescue principles, practices, techniques, apparatus and equipment.
- Knowledge of fire prevention techniques.
- Knowledge of emergency medical care techniques and methods in their skill and application.
- Knowledge of salvage and overhaul operations.
- Skill in operating fire apparatus and firefighting equipment.
- Proficient knowledge in personal computing skills, electronic mail, record keeping, database activity, and word processing.
- Ability to analyze conditions and respond quickly according to standard operating guidelines and policies.
- Ability to work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with fellow employees and the public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects while wearing protective equipment that can be heavy and hot. Additional physical demands include carrying 80-100 lbs. of equipment while working; climbing many flights of stairs, ascending and descending on ground ladders and fire escapes; and working at heights and in confined spaces to fight fires and rescue victims. Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, night vision, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment. Generally work from an office or vehicle, but may be exposed to extreme outdoor elements for an extended period of time. May come in contact with bio-hazardous materials and waste, by-products of smoke, narcotics, hostile individuals, and individuals with contagious diseases. May be exposed to extreme situations including direct exposure to fire, chemicals, poorly lighting, and hazardous sites. The general work schedule requires 24-hour shifts, assigned on an alternating basis with two days off between assignments. While on duty, employees live and sleep at the fire station.
