Western State Bank is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Mortgage Loan Underwriter. A successful applicant will have strong attention to detail and the ability to work with complex financial documents. The Underwriter is responsible for evaluating potential loans to ensure they meet established policy guidelines, assess risk levels, and comply with industry standards and deadlines. This role will support Mortgage Loan Officers by reviewing and analyzing documentation to determine loan eligibility, creditworthiness, and adherence to regulatory and institutional standards. The Underwriter will also work closely with investors, prepare necessary disclosures, and ensure all tasks are completed in a timely manner.
This position is based in Garden City, Kansas.

Duties include (but are not limited to):
- Review and analyze loan applications, credit reports, income verification, asset statements, title commitments, contracts, appraisals, insurance policies, and other relevant documents to assess the borrower’s eligibility and creditworthiness.
- Ensure all loan documentation is complete, accurate, and in compliance with established policies and industry regulations.
- Ensure all loan decisions are completed within required timeframes to facilitate timely loan approvals and closings.
- Assess risk levels for each loan, considering borrower financials, market conditions, and institutional risk appetite.
- Collaborate with Mortgage Loan Officers to clarify and resolve any issues related to loan documentation for smooth processing.
- Submit and process loan information with investors, ensuring all necessary documents are properly presented.
- Prepare and issue required disclosures as requested by Mortgage Loan Officers in compliance with regulatory timelines.
- Maintain a high level of accuracy in underwriting decisions, ensuring compliance with both internal and external standards.
- Stay up-to-date with industry changes, regulatory requirements, and best practices to maintain compliance.
- Assist in special projects or other duties as assigned.
Skills and traits of the ideal candidate include:
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work with complex financial documents and assess borrower creditworthiness.
- Proficiency in handling multiple time-sensitive tasks and working under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Ability to learn and retain in-depth knowledge of underwriting guidelines, risk assessment, and compliance regulations.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to maintain accurate and up-to-date records.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in reviewing documentation.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to support Mortgage Loan Officers, investors, and other internal teams.
- Experience in a mortgage, financial service industry or loan processing is a plus.
- Proven experience as an Underwriter in the mortgage or financial services industry is a plus.
Requirements:
- At least 2-3 years of experience in mortgage underwriting or a similar role.
- A combination of education/experience to meet the minimum qualifications will be accepted.
This is a full time, Monday through Friday position. Working hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an occasional after hours or weekend activity.
Salary is negotiable dependent on qualifications and experience.
