SCHOOL NURSE - HIGH SCHOOL

Join us in making a positive impact on the lives of students by providing essential health care services within the school environment.

Overview
The major focus of school nursing services is the prevention of illness and disability, and the early detection and correction of health problems. The School Wellness Program Nurse is uniquely qualified in preventive health, health assessment, referral procedures and education for at-risk children and families in Pre-K through Grade 12 and will also assist with emergency care for sudden illness.

Essential Functions: Provides a variety of school health services based off of the Child Adolescent Health Centers, School Wellness Program’s Minimum Program Requirements.

· Nursing Assessment of health problems, identifying health needs of students

· Initiates referrals to parents, school personnel, and community health resources for intervention, remediation, and follow through

· Case management of students with chronic health care needs and those needing emergency action plans, which may include treatment and coverage of diabetics, seizures, asthma, and severe allergic reactions, etc.

· Utilizes a method of tracking to maintain and document case management progress

· Helps school personnel recognize departures from appropriate behavior and growth patterns; helps students and staff adjust student programs when necessary to accommodate health needs of students.

· Supports the child education evaluation team process in developing health individualized educational plans (I.E.P.) and 504 plans, as the health specialist in the building, when healthcare needs are identified.

· Care coordination of services between school, home, and the community. Makes home visits as needed.

· Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs, early detection, surveillance, and reporting of contagious diseases.

· Supports the medication administration process as needed, with training, follow-up, and oversight of trained personnel

· Recommends provisions for a school environment conducive to learning

· Assist in the formation of health policies, goals, and objectives for the district

· Educates and provides support for school Medical Emergency Response Teams (MERT) at the building level

· Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

· Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred

· Associate degree in nursing will be considered, based on prior experience

· State of Michigan R.N. license required

· One year of experience working with children in a school or pediatric health setting preferred.

· Current BLS/CPR Certification

Other Requirements:

· Valid Motor Vehicle Operators License

Skills:

· Ability to communicate, both in writing and orally.

· Ability to work creatively and skillfully with children of all ages.

· Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team with staff from various areas of responsibility

· Self-motivated and able to work in a quick-paced environment

· Ability to plan and manage tasks in a timely manner

· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

· Knowledge of computer technology, word processing, and excel.

· Ability to utilize district technology

· Ability to educate staff, children and families.
