Position Summary
The Maintenance Director is responsible for planning, coordinating, and performing maintenance, repair, and preventive maintenance activities for the Brooks County Jail and other county-owned facilities. This position ensures that all buildings, systems, and equipment are maintained in a safe, secure, and operational condition. The Maintenance Director performs skilled and semi-skilled work involving electrical, plumbing, painting, grounds maintenance, and general building repairs while ensuring compliance with safety standards, detention facility requirements, and applicable regulations.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesFacility Maintenance
- Inspect county facilities and jail operations regularly to identify maintenance and repair needs.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on buildings, equipment, and infrastructure.
- Perform basic plumbing, electrical, painting, carpentry, and mechanical repairs.
- Troubleshoot maintenance issues and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
- Respond to emergency maintenance situations as needed.
Jail Operations Support
- Ensure jail facilities remain secure, safe, and operational at all times.
- Maintain detention-related equipment, security hardware, locking mechanisms, and facility infrastructure.
- Coordinate repairs in a manner that minimizes disruption to jail operations.
- Work closely with jail administration and staff regarding facility concerns and maintenance priorities.
- Ensure compliance with correctional facility standards, health regulations, and safety requirements.
County Facilities Support
- Perform maintenance and repair work for county offices, public buildings, and other county-owned properties.
- Coordinate maintenance schedules and prioritize work assignments across multiple locations.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Maintain records of repairs, inspections, maintenance activities, and equipment service schedules.
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs.
- Monitor inventory levels and order maintenance supplies, materials, and equipment as needed.
- Obtain quotes and coordinate with outside contractors when specialized repairs are required.
- Assist in preparing maintenance-related budgets and recommendations.
- Ensure compliance with county purchasing policies and procedures.
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all applicable safety regulations and departmental procedures.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA standards and applicable state and local regulations.
- Conduct routine safety inspections and address potential hazards.
- Maintain proper storage and handling of tools, equipment, and hazardous materials.
Minimum QualificationsEducation and Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Technical training in building maintenance, electrical systems, construction, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible building maintenance experience required.
- Experience in correctional, governmental, institutional, or commercial facility maintenance preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of maintenance practices involving electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and general building systems.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance principles.
- Ability to diagnose and repair facility-related problems.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with county officials, detention staff, contractors, vendors, and the public.
- Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and respond effectively to emergencies.
- Knowledge of workplace safety practices and procedures.
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid Georgia Driver's License required.
- Electrical, plumbing, or other trade certifications preferred.
- Ability to obtain any certifications required by state or county regulations.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently stand, walk, bend, climb, crouch, and lift materials and equipment.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and heavier loads with assistance.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to work on ladders, roofs, in confined spaces, and around mechanical equipment.
- Ability to respond to emergencies outside of normal working hours.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed in a correctional facility, county offices, public buildings, and outdoor environments.
- Position may be exposed to noise, dust, chemicals, mechanical hazards, and varying weather conditions.
- Must adhere to all county and jail security protocols.
