SALARY: $45,864 (15.75/ hourly) plus full benefits package
SUMMARY: This is a non-certified training position for the general duties of an Emergency Medical Technician/Firefighter prior to their certification from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), licensure by the Georgia Department of Public Health, and certification by the Georgia Firefighter Standard and Training Council (GFSTC). Work assignments will be under the direct supervision of the Fire Department Training Division and will include training in a classroom, training at DCFD’s Training Complex, as well as in the field setting. This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Successfully complete Douglas County Fire/EMS Department Advanced Emergency Medical Technician course
- Successfully obtain certification by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) and licensure as Advanced Emergency Medical Technician by the Georgia Department of Public Health.
- Successful completion of Firefighter I and Firefighter II certified per GFSTC requirements.
- Successfully obtain Georgia Firefighter Certification in accordance with O.C.G.A. 25-4-8 and 9.
GENERAL
· Understand the objectives and learning outcomes of the course.
· Contribute to the development of objectives for the clinical experience.
· Look for opportunities to learn and recognize the wealth of information available in the clinical area.
· Adhere to the general rules, policies, and regulations of the health care organization.
· Recognize her/his knowledge, skills and abilities, limits of responsibilities, legislative authority and supervision requirements.
· Recognize that she/he is accountable for the quality of care she/he provides within the established objectives.
· Recognize her/his responsibility to notify the educator if learning objectives are not being achieved due to setting and/or the preceptor relationship.
· Complete the clinical assignments before leaving the facility.
PROFESSIONALISM
· Be prepared for each day and dress and act in a professional manner.
· Delineate, establish, and maintain professional boundaries with each patient/resident.
· Provide privacy during examination or treatment and in the care of personal or bodily needs.
· Provide care to assigned patient(s)/resident(s) without discrimination and treat each patient/resident with courtesy, respect, and with full recognition of dignity and individuality.
· Be friendly, courteous and polite.
COMMUNICATION
· Use clear, accurate and effective communication skills in professional interactions.
· Obtain a report from the staff, preceptor or instructor prior to giving care and collaborate with staff members who retain responsibility for the patient/resident.
· Introduce him/herself appropriately to patients/residents and ask permission to participate in their care.
· Immediately inform the patient/resident care provider of significant changes in a patient’s/resident’s condition.
· Communicate situations of conflict in which a student perceives that his or her individual cultural values, ethics, or religious beliefs are in direct conflict with specific aspects of the clinical or observational experience.
· Document patient/resident assessments or observations, the care provided to the patient/resident, and the patient's/resident's response to that care.
· Give a report to the staff on the condition and care of the assigned patient(s)/resident(s) before leaving the clinical area for any reason.
SAFETY
· Respect the safety and well-being of the patient/resident in the clinical learning experience.
· Check with the instructor or preceptor before administering any medications (all medication orders are to be verified per health care organization’s policy before they are given).
· Implement measures to promote a safe environment for each patient/resident.
· Know the infection control, safety, fire, and emergency procedures of the health care organization.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

REQUIREMENTS:
· Mandatory - Minimum 18 years of age
· Completion of the Accuplacer Exam will be required
· High School Diploma/GED
· Must have and maintain a valid United States Driver's License (Class C), a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR) and the ability and willingness to drive a county vehicle; if assigned job duties require the use of a vehicle. Must not have any serious traffic offenses or DUI convictions within the last five (5) years
· Must not have been convicted of a felony within the last ten (10) years
· Must be in good physical condition as determined by Douglas County’s Physical
Agility and a physical examination
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Knowledge and skill in the treatment, stabilization, and transportation of the sick and injured.
- Knowledge of basic life support procedures, techniques, and equipment.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Knowledge of the geography of the County and the ability to become familiar with all County roads and highways.
- Ability to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation in a pulseless, non-breathing patient.
- Ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions.
- Ability to follow established safety rules and departmental policies and procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret a variety of documents including correspondence, policies, procedures, and technical documents.
- Ability to react quickly and calmly while under pressure in emergency situations.
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate reports and records.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees and the general public.
- Ability to retain valid certification as an Emergency Medical Technician.
- Ability to retain valid Georgia Firefighter status.
Employment is contingent upon passing a mandatory Background Investigation, MVR, Medical Exam, and Drug Screening.
