Position Title and No.: Foreign Language Interpreter

Unit: Clerical Support Services

Grade/Salary Range: 66 FLI $41,660 - $75,925 Starting $45,370.44

DESCRIPTION OF WORK: The primary purpose of this position is to provide interpretation services to ensure that agency workers
and non-English speaking customers can communicate. This position will accompany workers during the regular workday and will

accompany service workers after hours, as needed, whenever interpretation services are required. This position will be available to

translate for the agency as needed at any time. Both verbal and written information will be translated. This worker must use Compass

Pilot, Compass Appointments, and the Day Sheets System.

To carry out their duties, the employee will learn and use specific programs, such as Compass Pilot and Compass Appointments. These

programs help with tasks like requesting leave, scheduling appointments, setting up virtual files, and managing documents.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 Communication between the workers and the customers is a vital and essential responsibility for

this position.
 This position must make sure that everything is interpreted exactly and accurately

between the workers and the customers.
 This position will accompany staff on home visits and anywhere else their services might be needed.
 This position will interpret communication between staff and customers.
 This position will converse by telephone with customers when services are needed.
 This position will attend court sessions when services are needed.
 This position is responsible for translating agency forms into the customer’s language.
 A personal computer is used to send letters and notices to the customers, which are translated into Haitian Creole and

Spanish.
 This position also makes informational signs in Haitian Creole and Spanish.
 This position translates mail that comes into the agency that is written in Haitian Creole and Spanish.
 This position assists the Clerical Support Unit with backing up receptionists as needed, assists with the purging of files when

time permits, sorts, files and assists with taking company vehicles to be serviced as needed.

WORK SCHEDULE

 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, subject to change to meet the needs of the Department. There
will be on-call after-hours work due to agency-related situations.

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 High school or GED and one year of experience in interpreting and translating English and the required foreign language in a
setting that requires knowledge of the programs or services.

 Demonstrates the fluency and skill necessary to meet the needs of the organization and client populations served.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to interpret correctly to ensure information provided to both employee and customers is accurate and complete; ability to use
judgment in organizing and establishing format; ability to gather and give basic information and instructions regarding departmental
programs based on inquiries; ability to learn a general knowledge of persons and agency programs; ability to comprehend and follow
verbal and written instructions; ability to compile information based on general instructions; ability to record information; ability to
learn and apply specific departmental rules and regulations relating to verifying, processing and maintaining records and documents;
working knowledge and ability to use correct grammar, vocabulary, and spelling in English, Haitian Creole, and Spanish; ability to

communicate effectively in person and by telephone in English, Haitian Creole, and Spanish; ability to be tactful and courteous in
projecting a favorable public image and ability to use a computer.

Ability to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.). Must possess a valid NC Driver's license and have access to a personal automobile

and carry the minimum amount of insurance as required by Wayne County Policy.
