Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. An employee may be requested to perform other duties assigned within the scope of responsibility and requirements of the job.
Definition:
Supervise individuals placed on community supervision by the Courts. Specific duties will be determined by the type of caseload assigned and may include, but not limited to: monitoring probationer compliance with the orders of the Court, assisting the probationer in locating services that help promote pro-social and law abiding behavior, conducting assessments and developing individualized case plans, and reporting violations of probation to the appropriate authorities. Work is performed in compliance with Article 42 A of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, chapter 76 and 509 of the Texas Government Code, Standards promulgated by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice-Community Justice Assistance Division (TDCJ-CJAD), and policies and procedures of the CSCD.
Examples of Important Responsibilities and Duties
Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential duties and responsibilities:
- Visit and communicate in person with the offender
- Conduct field visits on the offender
- Verify offender employment
- Conduct an intake with all offenders
- {re[are assessments, case classifications, and strategies for case supervision, supervision plans and reassessment interviews
- Thoroughly document supervision case files including computer entry
- Perform and other duties as may be assigned by the Director and/or Area Supervisors
Other important duties and responsibilities:
- Transport offenders other than those offenders held in a county jail pursuant to an arrest warrant.
- Telephone, initiate officer visits or receive written information from any person providing information about an offender being supervised by the department.
- Collect urine samples from offenders for drug/alcohol screening.
- Testify in legal proceedings when called upon.
- Have a good working knowledge of community supervision law.
- Attend all staff meeting unless excused.
- Communicate with other governmental agencies or community organizations to promote a positive image of the department and provide information regarding services available to offenders within the department.
Ability to:
- Communicate effectively both written and oral
- Manage time wisely and work independently
- Apply working knowledge of case management techniques
- Maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and other agencies and departments
Special Requirements:
- Applicant must be 21 years of age or older at the time of employment.
- Applicant cannot be employed or volunteer as a peace officer, nor can the applicant currently be on probation, parole, or serving a sentence for any criminal offense.
Experience and Training Guidelines: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
License or Certificate:
- Bachelor Degree granted by an accredited institution of higher education recognized by the Texas Higher Educating Board.
- Prior experience in casework, counseling, community or group work preferred.
- Valid Texas driver license required.
Miscellaneous Information:
- Basic first aid and knowledge of CPR helpful
- Safety skills when dealing with hostile people
- Responding to emergency situations.
- Exposure to body fluids.
- May be exposed to armed/dangerous persons and communicable diseases.
Environmental Conditions:
- Primarily indoors, however, will require some outdoor activity conducting site visits, court appearances, etc.
Physical Conditions:
- Must be able to pull open and push filing cabinets
- Must be able to lift or grasp files from and return files to the secured location
- Must be able to conduct home visits whose homes may not be equipped to accommodate certain physical challenges
