Position Summary
True North Accounting is seeking an experienced, dependable, and highly detail-oriented Remote Part-Time Staff Accountant to join our team.
This position will be responsible for recurring bookkeeping, account reconciliations, month-end close, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll support, financial reporting, tax-related work, and other accounting responsibilities for multiple clients.
This is not an entry-level position. The successful candidate must be able to manage recurring deadlines, follow documented procedures, take ownership of assigned work, identify discrepancies, maintain organized documentation, and ask thoughtful questions when additional guidance is needed.
Primary Responsibilities
Responsibilities will include:
- Maintain accurate accounting records in QuickBooks Online.
- Review, categorize, and record bank and credit card transactions.
- Complete monthly bank, credit card, loan, payroll, clearing, and balance-sheet account reconciliations.
- Research and resolve unreconciled transactions, unusual balances, duplicate entries, and other discrepancies.
- Complete assigned month-end close procedures.
- Review profit and loss statements and balance sheets for accuracy and reasonableness.
- Prepare adjusting journal entries and maintain supporting workpapers.
- Manage or assist with accounts payable processes.
- Assist with client billing, accounts receivable, payment application, and aging review.
- Process payroll or review payroll records for accuracy.
- Reconcile payroll reports to the general ledger.
- Prepare or assist with sales tax and payroll tax filings.
- Monitor filing deadlines and communicate potential issues or missing information promptly.
- Prepare business and individual income tax returns and related workpapers under supervision.
- Prepare recurring financial reports.
- Assist with financial analytics, trend analysis, and budget-to-actual or period-over-period comparisons.
- Complete IOLTA and other attorney trust account reconciliations.
- Prepare monthly three-way trust reconciliations for law-firm clients.
- Maintain organized, complete, and review-ready client files.
- Follow internal checklists, standard operating procedures, and quality-control requirements.
- Protect confidential client, payroll, tax, employee, and financial information.
- Assist with accounting cleanup, catch-up work, and other projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:
- At least two years of hands-on bookkeeping or accounting experience.
- Associate degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field.
- Substantial directly relevant work experience may be considered in place of the degree requirement.
- Working knowledge of accounting principles, including debits and credits, journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statements.
- Experience reviewing financial records and identifying inaccurate, incomplete, or unusual transactions.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate work.
- Ability to manage multiple clients, assignments, and recurring deadlines.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment while following established procedures.
- Strong organizational, written communication, and follow-through skills.
- Reliable internet access and a secure workspace appropriate for handling confidential financial information.
- Availability to work Monday through Friday during the required schedule.
- Willingness and ability to obtain the required QuickBooks Online certification during the first week of employment.
QuickBooks Online Certification Requirement
Paid onboarding includes completing your QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor certification during your first week.
Certification training and time spent completing the required certification will be included as part of paid onboarding. Employees may also be required to maintain or renew the certification as QuickBooks updates its certification requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
The following experience is preferred but not required:
- Previous law-firm accounting experience.
- Experience with IOLTA or attorney trust accounts.
- Experience completing three-way trust reconciliations.
- Experience working in an accounting firm, outsourced accounting firm, or multi-client bookkeeping environment.
- Experience using QuickBooks Online.
- Current QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor certification.
- Experience using Clio or another legal practice-management system.
- Experience using OnPay, Gusto, or another payroll platform.
- Experience preparing business or individual income tax returns.
- Experience preparing sales tax or payroll tax filings.
- Experience with Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.
- Experience with financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, or analytics.
Schedule and Work Expectations
This is a remote, part-time W-2 position with up to 30 hours available each week.
Work will be performed Monday through Friday between:
8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time
A consistent schedule will be established upon hire. Dependable attendance, timely communication, and availability during the agreed-upon schedule are essential.
Applicants may reside anywhere in the United States, provided they are able to work during the required Eastern Time hours.
Compensation and Benefits
True North Accounting offers:
- Hourly compensation of $15.00–$20.00, depending on education and relevant qualifications.
- Part-time W-2 employment.
- Up to 30 hours per week.

A successful Staff Accountant will:
- Complete assigned work accurately and on schedule.
- Take responsibility for recurring duties without repeated reminders.
- Follow established procedures and maintain clear supporting documentation.
- Review their work before submitting it.
- Identify unusual transactions, balances, or reporting inconsistencies.
- Ask questions rather than make unsupported assumptions.
- Communicate delays, missing information, or concerns promptly.
- Respond professionally to review notes and apply feedback to future work.
- Maintain confidentiality and exercise appropriate professional judgment.
- Demonstrate accountability, reliability, and continued improvement.
