Purpose of Position
The Director of the Office of Extended Learning-Programming, as part of the Teaching Transformation and Development Academy (TTaDA), provides strategic leadership for the entire department, including development and growth of the university’s continuing education programs, ensuring alignment with UND’s strategic plan, workforce demands, and emerging trends in lifelong learning. This position is responsible for leading, overseeing, guiding, and administering all of the non-credit programming within the Office, which currently consists of Conferences, Camps and Events; the Nutrition and Foodservice Training Program; Professional Development for Educators; Personal and Professional Development; Community Classes, and Certificate and Micro-Credential Programs; as well as the Self-Paced Enroll Anytime Program. Working in collaboration with the coordinators of each program, the Director ensures revenue generation and sustainability through the development and expansion of new and existing programs, workforce partnerships, and alternative learning pathways.
Duties & Responsibilities
Provide leadership, guidance, oversight, and support for the Office of Extended Learning (OEL), ensuring growth within all existing programs and continuous development of new offerings. Develop and monitor all program budgets and monitor revenue generation and projections. Provide vision and leadership for all OEL programs.
- Provide leadership and oversight for all program development for current and new non-credit programs and the Self-Paced Enroll Anytime program
- Seek innovative solutions for students seeking educational pathways (non-credit to credit or credit to non-credit) that lead to student success, enhanced learning opportunities and engagement in continuing education offerings across all programming areas
- Manage and lead all development of program budgets and special project budgets for clients and partners. Ensure coordinators understand the benefit of break-even budgeting. Review budget reports each month and ensure accuracy of the reports
- Regularly monitor all budgets for OEL programming areas, and complete OEL’s variance report on a monthly basis
- Work closely with OEL Director of Operations to review processes, procedures, and efficiencies, and guide new procedures that are put into place within the Office of Extended Learning
- Evaluate if and how academic offerings may be able to include a non-credit component, and work with the academic department on implementation
- Monitor and guide new course and certificate offerings, in collaboration with coordinators, to ensure timelines, efficiencies and requirements are met. Work with staff in bidding new client projects, including third party vendors
- Ensure accessible, flexible, and high-quality programming for a diverse audiences, including adult and non-traditional learners, as well as addressing alumni needs.
- Participate and guide conference activities onsite as needed
- Assist program coordinators, communications coordinator and marketing team to ensure our marketing and web presence needs are being met
- Work with coordinators to create contracts and procedures for new and existing courses and programs, and ensure that contracts are reviewed and updated on a regular basis and renewed prior to contract end dates
- Determine operational and financial feasibility of new programs, projects, partnerships and collaborations, ensuring that new offerings are sustainable and aligned with the university’s strategic plan and the mission of OEL
- Assign new projects to coordinators based on staff member’s capacity and experience
- Work with coordinators to develop and monitor course/project/program surveys
- Be aware of, and ensure all coordinators comply with, ND Board of Higher Education policies and procedures, licensure requirements, and other state and federal regulations impacting OEL offerings
- Work closely with UND and NDUS entities (CTS, Marketing, UIT) to ensure our project needs are met and the greatest efficiencies are in place for the Office of Extended Learning
Create partnerships and collaborations within the University of North Dakota and beyond (external partnerships) for OEL’s current and new non-credit programs and Self-Paced Enroll Anytime program
- Establish and maintain partnerships with industry, community organizations, and academic units to deliver high-quality continuing education programs
- Work with academic departments, faculty members, outside agencies/organizations and potential new partners on new and ongoing non-credit course/certificate/micro-credential development and Self-Paced Enroll Anytime courses (undergraduate and graduate)
- Foster collaborative partnerships within UND, the community, the region and beyond, in support of OEL’s programming
- Develop and implement contracts based on partnership needs or those with whom we are collaborating
- Create micro-credentials and badges in support of non-credit offerings and experiences, in collaboration with UND's Badging/Micro-Credentialing Initiative
- Assess workforce needs through market research in the state of North Dakota and beyond, and work with the coordinators to create new offerings or to promote existing offerings to fill workforce needs, which may lead to new partnership opportunities within UND or beyond
Provide supervision, support and mentorship to members of the Extended Learning Team, participate in professional development appropriate for position, other duties as assigned.
- Meet with each direct report monthly to review progress on projects, goals, new developments, etc.
- Develop performance evaluations for all supervised staff. Review the evaluations with leadership/the skip-level reviewer. Determine raises based on merit and market
- Lead the individual goal setting process with individual staff members
- Manage staff concerns and work through issues that arise within the Office of Extended Learning and bring issues to leadership that need addressing
- Work as an integral member of the OEL team and the TTaDA Leadership Team
- Assist in developing a positive culture within OEL and TTaDA, providing support and acting as a role model to other team members
- Participate in team meetings, professional development training, UND and NDUS committees, and other meetings as appropriate or assigned
- Provide guidance on professional development for team members
- Participate in professional development appropriate for growth as a leader within Continuing Education (e.g. UPCEA)

Minimum Requirements
- Master’s Degree in Adult and Continuing Education, Higher Education, Business Administration, Organizational Leadership, or related field
- Five years of progressively responsible experience in continuing education, workforce development, higher education administration or related program management
- Three years of supervisory experience
- Experience managing budgets and revenue-generating programs
- Experience in requesting, evaluating, and implementing market research data and reports
- Experience managing projects from initiation to follow-up
- Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and database software
- Experience writing professional correspondence and reports
- Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

- Doctoral Degree (Higher Education, Educational Leadership, Business Administration, Adult Education, Business Administration or related field)
- Experience with curriculum development or customized training
- Experience leading self-supporting, auxiliary, or revenue-generating educational programs
- Experience with online learning, micro-credentials, badges, certificates and alternative credentialing pathways
- Experience with market analysis, business development and program expansion
- Experience working within a public university system and knowledge of state higher education governance structures
- Experience working with contracts, vendor relationships, and partnership agreements
- Experience with meeting accessibility standards and federal accessibility requirements
- Experience with Blackboard or other learning management system preferred
