About the Project
National Contracting Services is seeking an experienced Construction Superintendent to lead the field for the rehabilitation of the historic Kawuneeche Visitor Center in Rocky Mountain National Park. This is an approximately 5,000 SF, slab-on-grade, wood-framed Mission 66 building eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The single-phase project includes work across three connected building "nodes" — an Administrative Wing, the Visitor Center, and a Comfort Station — plus site and exterior improvements. Work will be performed for the National Park Service under a single prime contract, with construction anticipated to begin in November.
Scope Highlights
The Superintendent will manage the full scope of a historic rehabilitation, including building envelope and insulation upgrades, replacement/rehabilitation of historic-profile windows, new electrical, plumbing, HVAC, telecommunications, fire suppression (antifreeze/preaction sprinkler) and fire alarm systems, historic masonry cleaning and stone/wood repair, EPDM roof restoration, interior finishes, and ABAAS accessibility improvements. Site work includes selective regrading, parking lot repaving, site furnishings, Dark Sky–compliant lighting, revegetation, and coordination with a separate interpretive-exhibit contractor working concurrently on site.
Responsibilities
- · Run day-to-day field operations, sequencing, and coordination of all trades and subcontractors to keep the project on schedule and within the contract timeline.
- Serve as the primary on-site point of contact and coordinate closely with the NPS Contracting Officer and their representatives.
- Enforce work restrictions specific to a national park setting — approved limits of disturbance, staging/storage confined to designated areas, 6:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. Monday–Friday work hours, and protection of existing vegetation, trees, cultural features, and utilities.
- Uphold the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and the approved historic-preservation treatment procedures throughout construction.
- Coordinate government-furnished materials, temporary facilities/occupant relocation, utility locates and shutdowns, and hot-work permitting.
- Support environmental and wildlife compliance requirements (e.g., Migratory Bird and Bald & Golden Eagle protection surveys, weed-free materials, bear/wildlife food-storage rules, erosion and stormwater controls).
- Maintain daily reports, schedule updates, submittals coordination, and closeout documentation.
- Partner with the QC Manager / Site Safety and Health Officer to maintain a safe, compliant, quality-driven job site.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience as a Superintendent on commercial or institutional construction; multi-trade renovation experience strongly preferred.
- Prior federal / government construction experience (NPS, USACE, NAVFAC, GSA, VA, or similar) is highly desirable.
- Experience with historic rehabilitation / preservation work is a strong plus.
- Working knowledge of federal safety and quality-control requirements (OSHA, EM 385-1-1, three-phase quality control).
- Ability to read and interpret construction documents, specifications, and schedules; comfort with scheduling software and daily reporting.
- OSHA 30-Hour certification (or ability to obtain before start); First Aid/CPR preferred.
- Strong leadership, coordination, and communication skills, with the professionalism to represent the contractor to a federal client and the public.
- Valid driver's license. Must be able to work on-site full-time at a remote, high-altitude mountain location and pass any required background screening for work on federal property.
Compensation & Details
- $70,000–$90,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
- Full-time, on-site, anticipated November start.
