Full Job Description

About the Role

We're looking for an experienced Formulation Chemist to lead the development and refinement of adhesive-backed film materials used in signage, vehicle graphics, and protective coating applications for our facility in Grand Rapids, MI. You'll design and fine-tune material formulations — balancing performance, durability, and appearance — while ensuring everything meets industry and environmental standards. This is a hands-on role that works closely with production, quality, and commercial teams to drive product innovation.

What You'll Do

Develop and refine polymer-based film formulations (including plasticizers, stabilizers, and additives) to hit target properties like flexibility, adhesion strength, UV stability, and consistent color performance
Run lab testing to assess physical, chemical, and mechanical characteristics — tensile strength, elongation, weather resistance, and similar metrics
Partner with manufacturing to fine-tune production processes for consistent quality at scale
Build and maintain quality assurance protocols aligned with recognized industry standards
Track emerging trends in polymer chemistry and materials science to inform new product development
Ensure all formulations meet relevant environmental, health, and safety regulations
Troubleshoot performance issues, production defects, and customer-reported problems
Keep thorough documentation of formulas, testing data, and process parameters; prepare technical summaries for internal and external audiences
Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, product, and sales teams to keep formulations aligned with market and customer needs

What You Bring

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, or a related field
5+ years of experience in polymer chemistry; background with film, vinyl, or similar cast materials is a strong plus
Solid grounding in formulation methods (including Design of Experiments), materials science, and statistical analysis
Hands-on experience with physical/analytical testing methods
Familiarity with casting or extrusion-type manufacturing processes
Strong troubleshooting instincts and attention to detail
Clear communicator who works well across teams
Six Sigma or similar process-improvement training a plus
Comfortable with LIMS software and data tools like Excel or Minitab
