We are seeking a reliable and skilled pipe digger to join our Site Management team. As an pipe operator, you will play a vital role in precision digging and the construction of storm/sanitation sewers, drains, and water mains. Safely operate a variety of construction machinery, including skid steers, front-end loaders, and excavators, for excavation and hauling. While primary duties focus on pipe digging and excavation support, candidates must be willing and flexible to perform general site manual labor during non-digging periods.
Responsibilities
· Precision Grading: Dig, consistent trench bottoms to exact "invert" elevations using pipe lasers, GPS systems, or grade stakes.
· Trench Safety: Apply expert knowledge of sloping and benching techniques based on soil classification to prevent cave-ins.
· Production Speed: Maintain a steady excavation pace to keep pipe-layers productive without sacrificing accuracy.
· Utility Care: Exercise extreme caution when exposing existing utilities; work seamlessly with ground spotters to avoid damage.
· Compliance: Act as or work with the "Competent Person" to inspect trenches daily for shifting, cracks, or water accumulation.
· Shoring Management: Safely place and pull trench boxes (shields) to ensure continuous protection for ground workers.
· Stop-Work Authority: Halt production immediately upon identifying any unsafe trench conditions or utility risks.
Requirements
· · Experience: At least one (1) year of experience in a heavy construction setting, specifically in utility installation or pipelaying.
· Technical Skill: Manual dexterity to skillfully operate heavy machinery and hand tools; knowledge of proper pipelaying sequences.
· Safety Focus: Strict adherence to all safety protocols and regulations to ensure a zero-accident working environment.
· Communication: Oral and written communication skills in English to coordinate activities and maintain professional public relations is helpful, but not necessary.
· Teamwork: A collaborative attitude, working closely with crew members to meet project deadlines and safety standards.
· Professionalism: Takes pride in a clean, organized job site and the proper maintenance of equipment.
