Communications Specialist/Writer (Union / Nonprofit / Journalism)

Location: Grand Rapids, MI
Job Type: Full-Time
Salary: $900 – $1,100 per week (based on experience)

We are a member-driven labor union committed to supporting working families and strengthening solidarity across our communities. Through clear communication, we keep our members informed, engaged, and connected to their union.

Position Overview

We are seeking a talented Communications Writer to join our team. This role plays a key part in shaping the voice of our union by creating meaningful, informative, and engaging content for our membership.

The primary responsibility of this role is writing and developing union publications and communications, with additional support provided to the Communications Department as needed.

Key Responsibilities

· Write and develop articles, newsletters, and union publications for membership

· Help define and maintain the union’s voice, tone, and messaging

· Cover and communicate important topics, including:

o Labor and workplace issues

o Contract updates and vote information

o Union events and initiatives

· Conduct interviews with union members and craft compelling stories

· Collaborate with staff to gather information and ensure accurate, timely communication

· Support Communications Department projects and outreach efforts as needed

· Assist in developing content for print, digital, and internal communications

Qualifications

· Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills

· Ability to translate complex information into clear, engaging content

· Excellent attention to detail and accuracy

· Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects

· Strong interpersonal skills for conducting interviews and working with members

Required Experience:

· Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Creative or Professional Writing, Public Relations, or a related field; or 1–3 years of relevant professional experience.

Preferred Experience:

· Experience with nonprofits, unions, or member-based organizations

· Familiarity with labor issues, organizing, or advocacy work

· Experience creating newsletters, publications, or long-form content
