JOB TITLE: ClD DETECTIVE
JOB SUMMARY:
The CID Detective works under the direction of the Chief of Police or his Designee and is responsible for conducting criminal investigations and carrying out the investigative goals of the Gravette Police Department. This position is governed by state and federal laws, and department policy.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
1) Conducts criminal investigations of persons suspected of violating criminal laws; processes crime scenes; collects evidence at the crime scene by utilizing photography, latent prints, and other investigative techniques; packages and submits evidence to the State Crime Laboratory for examination; interviews suspects, witnesses and victims; writes reports and affidavits for arrest and search warrants; serves arrest and search warrants; presents investigative reports an evidence to prosecutor for prosecution; recovers stolen property and advises victim as to progress of the investigation.
2) Makes arrests; fingerprints and photographs suspects; checks background of suspect; and prepares case file and evidence for the Prosecuting Attorney for filing of charges; testifies before grand juries; and follows cases through court to completion; reviews reports and intelligence from other law enforcement agencies.
3) Answers telephone calls about police related questions from the general public assists other law enforcement agencies in conducting investigations.
4) Conducts narcotic investigations; develops and maintains contact with informants in obtaining information about cases under investigation; and conducts surveillance on persons suspected of criminal activity.
5) Prepares and updates case files. Ensures that files contain required reports and relevant information.
6) Participates in department training
7) Appears in court to testify when necessary to ensure convictions of violators.
8) Carries out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County and City laws and ordinances.
9) Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.
WORK RELATIONSHIPS:
The CID Detective has frequent contact with department personnel, other law enforcement agencies, businesses, and the general public, and occasional contact with civic organizations and schools.
SPECIAL JOB DIMENSIONS:
Subject to call out. Exposure to danger is possible and carrying a firearm is required. Irregular working hours may be required. This is a “Safety Sensitive” position.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of law enforcement. Knowledge of the criminal justice system. Knowledge of the principles of self-defense and the use of small arms. Knowledge of investigative techniques. Knowledge of applicable federal and state statutes, local ordinances, and court decisions. Ability to observe analytically and objectively, analyze situations quickly, determine and take prompt, effective action. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to conduct investigations to determine violations of the law or to determine cause. Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions. Ability to handle situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and impartially. Ability to present expert testimony in a court of law. Will assist covering shifts when needed day or night shifts.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Be a citizen of the United States. Possess a valid Arkansas driver’s license. The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma. Served at least two years as a Law Enforcement Officer.
Other job-related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of these basic requirements upon approval of the Chief of Police.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Certified as a Law Enforcement Officer by the Arkansas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Training as established by Arkansas Code 12-9-204.
