I. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Technician is responsible for performing laboratory tests and procedures that assist in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases for Little Shell Health Clinic (LSHC) customer-owners. As an integral part of the LSHC multidisciplinary healthcare team, this position will collaborate with other medical professionals to ensure customer-owners receive optimal care in a patient-centered, outpatient environment. On an ongoing basis, this team member will provide innovative solutions aimed at continuous improvement of the care experience and safety for staff and customer-owners.
II. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Clinical Laboratory Testing:
· Withdraw appropriate quantities of blood by vein and capillary puncture.
· Perform a wide range of diagnostic laboratory tests, including hematology, microbiology, chemistry, immunology, and molecular biology.
· Accurately analyze specimens (e.g., blood, urine, tissue) using automated and manual techniques.
· Interpret test results, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of data.
· Document test results and communicate findings to physicians and other healthcare professionals in a timely manner.
· Prepare and maintain patient specimens for examination, ensuring proper labeling and handling in compliance with regulations.
· Participate in the development and implementation of new testing protocols, technologies, and laboratory procedures.
· Utilize electronic health record (EHR) system, RPMS, to enter and maintain accurate, timely and up-to-date medical records.
· Keep detailed documentation of laboratory procedures, test results, and quality control records.
· Other duties as assigned and in keeping with standards of practice.
B. Quality Control and Assurance:
· Follow established laboratory protocols, safety procedures, and quality control standards to maintain high levels of accuracy and consistency.
· Perform routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment to ensure proper functionality.
· Conduct quality assurance checks to ensure all tests meet regulatory and accreditation standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP).
· Troubleshoot issues with equipment or test results and resolve discrepancies as needed.
· Participate in regular audits, quality assurance reviews, and proficiency testing to maintain laboratory accreditation and certification.
· Ensure the proper handling, storage, and disposal of biological specimens and hazardous materials in accordance with safety regulations.
C. Compliance and Safety:
· Adhere to all safety regulations and infection control protocols in the laboratory environment to prevent contamination and ensure safety for patients and staff.
· Maintain proper storage, handling, and disposal of biological specimens and hazardous materials in accordance with health and safety standards.
· Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, including HIPAA, OSHA, and CDC guidelines.
III. TRAINING & EXPERIENCE
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Technician must have expertise in laboratory techniques, a thorough understanding of laboratory equipment, and a strong commitment to ensuring accurate and timely test results in a clinical setting. Experience working with an interprofessional health care team and with American Indian/Alaska Native, minority, or under-resourced communities is desired.
A. Knowledge
- Strong knowledge of laboratory techniques, medical terminology, and diagnostic procedures.
- Familiarity with laboratory equipment and software for data entry, result analysis, and reporting.
B. Skills
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office (specifically Word and Excel), electronic medical records, email and data base software.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

IV. QUALIFICATIONS
· Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Technology, or a related field.
· Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or equivalent from a recognized accrediting body (e.g., ASCP, AMT).

V. PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Essential job duties require sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods and occasional lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. There may be occasional need to move supplies and equipment. The position requires manual dexterity to handle laboratory equipment and specimens. The positions also requires exposure to biohazardous materials and chemicals in accordance with safety regulations, policies, and procedures. It also requires focusing on close and distant visual tasks and the ability to hear normal conversational discussion.
VI. Conditions of Employment
· Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check with fingerprinting and DOJ Clearance. Employees must pass a criminal background periodically throughout employment.
· Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license, no alcohol related conviction, and meet the insurability requirements of the Tribe.
VII. INDIAN PREFERENCE
The position is subject to the Little Shell Tribe’s Indian Preference Policy.
