The Weld County Youth Conservation Corps AmeriCorps program operates out of the Weld County Workforce Center in Greeley, Colorado. The primary focus of Crew members includes environmental stewardship, conservation/restoration practices, community improvement and engagement, and education advancement and exploration. Opportunities for participation exist on a year-round basis, offering youth entry-level experience in the form of a crew-based model.

Corps Member: Conservation Crew Member - Swamper
Location: Employment Services of Weld County, Greeley, Colorado
AmeriCorps living allowance: $1,100 bi-monthly, disbursement on the 15th and last day of the month, up to $8,800. Taxes are deducted and the living allowance is distributed by direct deposit.
Time Commitment: 40 hours/week, Monday – Friday 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
- Alternative schedules may be considered for project specific requirements and certain training opportunities.
Season Dates: September 1st - December 31st, 2026
AmeriCorps Benefits: County Holidays off, potential opportunity to obtain Chainsaw operator certification, Pesticide Applicator Technician certification , student loan forbearance on eligible student loans, $2,817.14 Segal Education Award following completion of 675-hour service.

Service Position Summary:
The Conservation Crew consists of young adults ages 16* – 30 and provides entry level experience, technical training, and development of personal and professional skills. Crew members’ primary focus is on assisting with invasive tree species removal as a Swamper. The swamper’s responsibility is to move the material cut by the sawyer. You may also get the opportunity to learn how to operate a chainsaw and receive certification and the possibility of participating in the WCYCC Flush and Flow water conservation program. Additional community service opportunities may take place during your term of service. Personal/professional development provides training and certificates, career exploration, experience in a team-based environment, effective communication, and personal and professional skills development.
*Out of school youth who has obtained High School Diploma or HSED
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Invasive species and hazard tree removal as a swamper
- Promote a strong service ethic while encouraging the development of teambuilding, self-worth, conflict resolution, effective communication, goal setting, and decision making
- Abide by WCYCC policies and procedures and maintain safety
- Maintain a positive attitude and reflect strong service ethic
Ability To:
- Serve in unpredictable weather and potentially harsh environmental conditions for long periods of time
- Communicate effectively with fellow corps members, crew leader, and program staff
- Problem solve in a variety of settings and with a diverse group of people
- Demonstrate sound judgment/risk management skills
- Service term may require attendance during the evenings and weekends as necessary (Camping for 2+ weeks)
Qualifications:
- MUST BE 16* – 30 YEARS OLD TO APPLY
* If 16 years old, must be an out-of-school youth who has obtained High School Diploma or HSED
- Must pass National Service Criminal History Checks (NSOPW, State, and FBI)
- U.S. Citizen, National, or Lawful Permanent Resident status required
- High school diploma or equivalent required in order to use Education Award after term of service
- Possess a valid state driver’s license or identification card
- Must be able to pass a drug screening
- Have reliable transportation to and from service base
Experience:
- Serving in a team environment
- Performing conservation-related service, or general labor tasks
- Comfortable with power tools and serving in a hazardous environment
Physical Requirements:
- Able to lift 75+ lbs. alone and as a team
- Ability to use/handle picks, sledgehammers, rakes, and shovels
- Ability to transverse uneven terrain
- Ability to bend, stoop, stretch, twist, or to squat to perform tasks
- Service term will require strenuous physical engagement

Pay: $2,200.00 - $2,400.00 per month
