Position Overview
We are seeking a compassionate, detail-orientated, and motivated Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to join our dermatology team. The ideal candidate will have excellent clinical and communication skills, a strong attention to detail, and the ability to provide professional, efficient, and compassionate care in fast-paced outpatient setting.
The LPN will work closely with dermatology physician assistants with 20+ years of dermatology experience, LPN's and other clinical staff to provide high-quality patient care. This position will involve direct patient interaction, clinical documentation, procedure assistance, medication-related tasks, telephone triage, and coordination of patient care.
A successful candidate should be comfortable working independently while also functioning as an important member of a collaborative dermatology team.
Essential Responsibilities
Patient Care & Clinical Assessment
- Room patients promptly and efficiently while providing a welcoming and professional experience.
- Obtain and document a thorough History of Present Illness (HPI), including relevant symptoms, duration, progression, previous treatments, and other pertinent information.
- Obtain and document vital signs and other appropriate clinical information.
- Review and update medication lists, allergies, medical history, and other relevant patient information.
- Identify and communicate pertinent changes in a patient's condition or history to the provider.
- Assist providers with overall flow of patient care.
- Provide patient education regarding medications, procedures, treatment plans, wound care, and follow up instructions as directed by the provider.
- Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
Clinical Documentation & Charting
- Accurately document patient information, HPI, nursing assessments, telephone encounters, medication-related information, and other clinical documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Ensure documentation is timely, accurate, complete, and consistent with practice standards.
- Review charts and prepare necessary clinical information prior to patient visits.
- Assist with obtaining and documenting relevant outside records, pathology results, laboratory results, and other information as needed.
- Maintain organized and accurate patient records.
Dermatology Procedures
- Prepare examination and procedure rooms prior to patients arrival.
- Gather and prepare appropriate instruments, supplies, medications, and equipment for dermatologic procedures.
- Assist the physician assistant with in-office procedures, which may include biopsies, excisions, cryotherapy, injections, wound care, and other dermatologic procedures within the LPN's scope of practice and practice protocols.
- Maintain appropriate sterile/clean technique and infection-control standards.
- Assist with specimen handling and preparation according to established office protocols.
- Clean and disinfect equipment and procedure areas following procedures.
- Ensure procedure rooms are appropriately stacked and ready for the next patient.
- Provide post-procedure patient instructions as directed by the provider.
Medication Prior Authorizations
- Initiate and process prior authorizations (PAs) for dermatologic medications.
- Communicate with insurance companies, specialty pharmacies, and medication assistance programs as needed.
- Gather required clinical information and documentation for prior authorization requests.
- Monitor the status of submitted authorizations and communicate updates to providers and patients.
- Assist with appeals and additional documentation when requested.
- Maintain accurate documentation of medication authorizations and related communications.
- Communicate medication coverage issues and alternatives to the provider for review.
Telephone Triage & Nursing Calls
- Respond to patient telephone calls and portal messages in a professional, timely, and compassionate manner.
- Perform nursing-level triage within the LPN's scope of practice and established office protocols.
- Assess patient concerns and determine the appropriate next step, including providing approved nursing guidance, scheduling an appointment, forwarding information to the provider, or directing the patient to seek urgent/emergency care when appropriate.
- Address questions regarding medications, treatment plans, wound care, post-procedure concerns, and other dermatologic-related issues within established protocols.
- Communicate patient concerns to the appropriate provider when clinical assessment or medical decision-making is required.
- Document all patient calls and communications accurately in the EMR.
- Follow up with patients are directed by the provider.
Patient Communication & Education
- Provide clear, compassionate, and professional communication with patients and families.
- Educate patients on medications, dermatologic treatments, procedures, wound care, and follow-up instructions as directed.
- Reinforce provider instructions and ensure patients understand their care plan.
- Demonstrate patience and empathy when addressing patient questions or concerns.
- Maintain a positive patient experience throughout the patient's visit and interactions with the practice.
Teamwork & Office Operations
- Collaborate effectively with physicians, physician assistants, providers, nurses, medical assistants, front-office staff, and practice leadership.
- Assist with maintaining efficient flow throughput the clinic.
- Communicate effectively with clinical and administrative team members.
- Maintain adequate inventory of clinical supplies and notify appropriate staff when supplies need to be ordered.
- Follow OSHA, HIPAA, infection-control, safety, and other applicable practice policies and procedures.
- Participate in quality improvement and practice initiatives as requested.
- Perform other clinical duties consistent with LPN role and scope of practice as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
- Current, unrestricted Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN/LVN) license for the state of Wisconsin.
- Graduate of an accredited practical nursing program.
- Current BLS certification or obtain within 3 months of hire.
- Strong clinical assessment, communication, and organizational sills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to accurately document in an electronic medical record.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced outpatient envirnment.
- Professional dependable, and patient-focused demeanor.
Preferred
- Previous experience in dermatology, dermatologic surgery, plastic surgery, primary care, or other outpatient specialty.
- Experience assisting with office-based procedures.
- Experience with medication prior authorizations.
- Experience with telephone triage and patient portal communication.
- Familiarity with dermatology medications and treatment protocols.
- Experience working with and electronic medical record system.

Physical & Work Environment
This position is performed in an outpatient medical office environment. The LPN may be required to stand and walk for portions of the workday, assist with patient positioning and procedure, and perform repetative clinical and computer-related tasks.
