Job Overview
The Machinist II is primarily responsible for producing high-precision components using manual machining equipment, with additional support of CNC operations as needed. This role emphasizes skilled operation of manual lathes, mills, drill presses, and other shop tools to machine parts to exacting specifications. The ideal candidate brings a strong understanding of traditional machining techniques, blueprint interpretation, and precision measurement, ensuring parts meet strict quality and engineering standards. While CNC machines may be used occasionally, the core focus of this role is manual machining and hands-on fabrication. Primary Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
- Operate manual machines including lathes, mills, and drill presses to machine parts to specifications.
- Read and interpret blueprints, work instructions, and technical drawings with focus on manual machining details.
- Use measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to inspect parts for accuracy.
- Monitor machining operations and perform in-process inspections to ensure part quality.
- Assist in basic troubleshooting of machine issues and notify supervisors or maintenance staff as needed.
- Utilize various power tools safely to support manual machining processes (table saws, bandsaws, sanders, drill presses, miter saws).
- Set up and run CNC machines (mills and/or lathes) using pre-written programs or make minor edits as needed, supporting primarily manual machining work.
- Accurately account for materials per processes and procedures.
- Accurately log time into the computer.
- Ensure paperwork and documentation is effectively completed and submitted for each job.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Strong manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for precise manual machining.
- Proficient in operating manual lathes, mills, drill presses, and other hand-operated machining tools.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply blueprints, technical drawings, and assembly instructions with an emphasis on manual machining details.
- Familiarity with shop math, including calculations for feeds, speeds, and machining tolerances.
- Working knowledge of cutting tools, tooling setup, and material properties relevant to manual machining.
- Ability to perform manual part setups, tool changes, and adjustments independently.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality parts that meet specifications.
- Basic troubleshooting skills for manual machine operation and ability to communicate issues effectively.
- Competent in the safe use of various power tools used in machining support tasks.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as an effective team member.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills in English.
Required Education and Experience
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience operating manual machining equipment such as lathes, mills, and drill presses.
- Proven experience reading and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings.
- Experience using precision measuring tools to verify part accuracy.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Technical certificate, associate degree, or completion of a machinist training program.
- Additional experience operating CNC machines and making minor program adjustments.
- Previous experience in a production or manufacturing environment.
- Knowledge of CNC programming fundamentals or willingness to pursue CNC training.
- Experience with material handling and inventory control systems.
Physical Requirements:
- Regularly required to stand and use hands to handle or touch objects, tools or controls.
- Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Occasionally required to walk, sit, stand, reach above shoulders, climb or balance, talk or hear, and use foot/feet to operate machinery.
- Must regularly lift and or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally move up to 100 pounds.
- Specific vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception.
