Job Title: MRI Imaging Assistant (I.A.(MR)(ARRT))
FLSA Status: Hourly/Non-Exempt
Reports to: MRI Supervisor, Facility Administrator/Clinical Manager
Position Summary
The Imaging Assistant, Magnetic Resonance (MR) supports MRI technologists by ensuring patient safety, assisting with preparation and positioning, and improving workflow efficiency. This role does not perform imaging or scanning but enhances patient care and safety while allowing technologists to focus on diagnostic procedures. The Imaging Assistant is a credentialed professional who support technologists to enhance patient care, safety, and operational efficiency. They perform essential patient-facing and safety-sensitive tasks within the MR environment.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
Patient Care & Clinical Support
· Obtain and monitor vital signs (BP, pulse, respiration)
· Verify patient identity and obtain history
· Assist with safe transfers and positioning
· Provide patient education and ensure comfort
· Assist with venipuncture and auxiliary equipment
· Monitor and document patient condition
· Maintain patient flow and support department efficiency
· Other duties as assigned
MRI Safety (Level 2)
· Conduct MRI safety screening for patients and personnel
· Manage MR safety Zones I–IV
· Recognize magnetic field, RF, and gradient hazards
· Ensure hearing protection compliance
· Assist with contrast safety and reactions
· Respond to emergencies (quench, fire, evacuation)
Patient Interaction & Workflow
· Greet patients and explain procedures
· Maintain patient privacy and comfort
· Manage patient flow between MR zones
· Support efficient departmental operations
Preparation & Positioning Assistance
· Patient positioning for exams including:
· Head/Neck/Spine: brain, cervical, thoracic, lumbar,
· Body/MSK: abdomen, pelvis, shoulder, hip, knee, wrist, ankle
- Provide immobilization aids and support alignment
Contrast Procedure Support
· Venipuncture
· Contrast media preparation & administration
· Prepare contrast materials and IV supplies
· Follow aseptic protocols
Quality Control & Equipment
· Inspect coils, cables, and equipment
· Monitor cryogen levels
· Perform QC tasks such as phantom setup
· Check room temperature and humidity
· Assist with scanner start-up/shutdown
· Perform daily safety checks
Infection Control
· Follow standard and transmission-based precautions
· Clean and disinfect equipment
· Apply aseptic techniques as required
Minimum Qualifications
Education: - High school diploma or GED required, I.A.(MR)(ARRT) certification required or eligible, Completion of MR Level 2 safety training required
Experience : Radiology or Healthcare experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
· Strong understanding of MRI safety protocols
· Excellent patient care and communication skills
· Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
· Attention to detail and commitment to safety
· EPIC and PACS experience preferred
· Consistently model AIDET principles, service excellence and service recovery.
· Consistently demonstrate commitment to safe practices while abiding by all OSHA and HIPAA guidelines.
· Have sound knowledge of human anatomy and MRI safety procedures.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to stand, walk, and move for extended periods, Ability to lift and assist patients safely, Manual dexterity for equipment handling. Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling. Must be able to stand, stoop, lift and walk without restrictions. Requires the physical ability to stand and walk throughout the day and help lift and move patients. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting/and or carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
WORKING CONDITIONS: This position operates in a outpatient imaging setting with exposure to strong magnetic fields and requires adherence to strict safety procedures.
Conditions of employment: BLS Certification, compliance with OSHA and HIPAA guidelines, radiation dosimeter badge and all required Personal Protective Equipment. Adherence to Mission, Vision and Values of DRI.
