Job Description Summary

The Medical Assistant is a clinical role, and can be located in the Mental Health and/or the Primary Care Department. This position is hourly, full-time, on-site, and unionized (UAW Local 2322). Medical Assistants may be certified as Medical Assistants (MAs), but certification is not required.

The Medical Assistant is responsible for aiding our clinic in providing exceptional primary care and mental health services to gender-diverse patients.

Objectives & Responsibilities

Work with primary care and mental health programs to coordinate patient care.
Active participation in patient care including anticipatory preparation for health maintenance and chronic health care needs, rooming patient, obtaining histories and vital signs, arranging referral and diagnostic testing appointments, proper identification and handling of specimens, EKGs and performing other procedures as determined relevant to the individual patient.
Demonstrate critical thinking skills concerning appropriate documentation of allergies, medication updates, immunizations, past medical history diagnosis, and any other information that is added to the medical record of an individual patient.
Demonstrate an understanding of the current and future needs of the patient in both chronic care and health maintenance and is able to use decision making skills to help patients meet those needs following appropriate protocols.
Overall responsibility for the flow of the provider’s patient care session, able to make decisions concerning adding a patient to the schedule upon appropriate approval, providing needed information to the front desk staff concerning the work flow in the patient care area and keeping the provider informed of issues that affect the efficiency of care during the session.
Support patient care and the health care team by anticipating administrative functions requiring support including but not limited to preparing prior authorizations, participating with the approval process for medications as appropriate, monitoring clinical messaging, supporting providers with completion of patient follow up letters, updating the medical record with patient information under the guidance of the provider.
Demonstrate a strong sense of shared responsibility to maintain a beautiful and orderly practice environment.
Depending on organization of roles within the practice, may share responsibility with other clinical techs/medical assistants for the quality, safety and laboratory check systems in the clinical environment including Quality Assurance for Point of Care testing.

Qualifications & Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent
Two years of relevant experience in a primary care or other healthcare setting is required
CMA certification is preferred but not required
Experience with a busy environment, requiring strong multitasking skills is required
Past experience working with transgender/gender-diverse community is a strong asset
Excellent interpersonal communication and skills whether in person, via the telephone and/or in writing
Able to work well both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Must be able to adhere and champion the values of Transhealth
Able to understand and empathize with others
Able to be compassionate at work, for colleagues and patients
Able to be flexible, open-minded, conscientious and assume positive intent
Is team-oriented

Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. There are no adverse environmental conditions expected.
