Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Head Coach: varsity girls volleyball will work with and take direction from the Athletic Director. This is a stipend position for the entire duration of the defined IHSA sport season.

Key Responsibilities

Administrative

Provide leadership and direction for the entire Girls Volleyball program.
Ensure adherence to school, district, IHSA, Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), and federal regulations regarding high school athletics.
Attend Independent School League (ISL) coaches meetings and submit all conference awards.
Organize and oversee practices, competitions, and team events.
Recruit, support, and evaluate assistant coaches.
Coordinate with school administration and the Athletic Department for pre-season meetings, in-season weekly check-ins, and end of the season coach evaluations.
Foster positive relationships with parents, community members, and media outlets.
Plan and supervise off-season opportunities, camps, clinics, and summer programming.
Maintain regular communication with the Director of Athletics about how the coaching relationship is working and team dynamics.
Have frequent meetings with the volleyball coaches in order to coordinate coaching methods at different levels; assign duties.
Ensure that safety and athletic handbook policies are understood and upheld by student-athletes (e.g. enforcing curfew while traveling to overnight competitions).
Report scores and outcomes to the Assistant Athletic Director.
Maintain records of the team and individual accomplishments.
Maintain compliance with Title IX requirements ensuring equal opportunities for all student-athletes.
Submit recommendations for the schedule for the next school year after the season.

Coaching

Stay informed on IHSA and Independent School League (ISL) rules, procedures and standards for policies.
Demonstrate strong leadership, supervisory, and organizational skills in program implementation.
Foster a cooperative, enthusiastic, and inclusive environment for student-athletes, fellow coaches, and parents.
Inspire and motivate student-athletes and coaching staff by setting an example of dedication and professionalism.
Nurture novice students while challenging experienced students.
Maintain and oversee the proper use and care of school-owned athletic equipment.
Adhere to all IHSA rules regarding student eligibility, transfers, and recruiting restrictions.
Account for all equipment, arrange for its issuance, storage, and reconditioning, and submit annual inventory records.
Assist in game day preparations as directed by the Athletic Director, ensuring all logistical aspects are managed effectively.
Demonstrate an ability to build on existing strengths while setting high standards for players and staff.
Demonstrate a strong understanding of volleyball strategy, skill development, and program alignment across levels.
Demonstrate a capacity to create and execute a clear plan for sustained program growth.
Demonstrate a proven commitment to player development, including the ability to teach fundamentals, elevate volleyball IQ, and support the growth of student-athletes at all levels of the program.
Demonstrate the ability to integrate strength and conditioning principles to support overall athletic performance.
Commit to teaching the game while modeling integrity, accountability, and teamwork with both coaches and student-athletes.
Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the administration.

Qualifications

ISBE or ASEP certification required
A bachelor’s degree
Previous high school, college, or club volleyballexperience
Illinois Professional Educators License or ASEP Coaching Certification required.
A driver’s license and willingness to be screened to receive approval to drive a Lab minibus for local tournaments (up to 3-4 hours away).

Terms of Employment

Employment is on a conditional basis pending completion of a state and national background check. Re-appointment for each subsequent year is possible with positive review/evaluation.

This is a contract position over 10-13 weeks that is paid via stipend, which is dictated by the Laboratory Schools Faculty Association Collective Bargaining Agreement. This is not a full-time position and is not benefits-eligible. Additional compensation is paid for weekend and/or overnight travel.
