We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller to oversee the company’s accounting and financial reporting functions across its portfolio of entities and assets.
Position Summary
The Controller is responsible for managing the day-to-day accounting operations of The Farm and Land Company, Inc. and its affiliated entities.
This role will oversee financial reporting, multi-entity accounting, cash management, budgeting, accounts payable and receivable, payroll accounting, internal controls, and coordination with outside tax and accounting professionals.
This is a hands-on position. The ideal candidate is comfortable managing both high-level financial reporting and detailed accounting functions, including reconciliations, journal entries, intercompany transactions, month-end close, and entity-level reporting.
The Controller will work closely with executive leadership and operational teams to ensure accurate financial records, strong accounting controls, and clear visibility into the financial performance of each business, property, and operating entity.
Key ResponsibilitiesAccounting & Financial Reporting
- Lead all general accounting activities and maintain the integrity of the general ledger.
- Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
- Prepare and review accurate and timely financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, and supporting schedules.
- Maintain accounting records in accordance with GAAP and company policies.
- Review and prepare journal entries, accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, depreciation schedules, and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Maintain the company’s chart of accounts and ensure transactions are properly classified.
- Identify and resolve accounting discrepancies, unusual transactions, and financial reporting issues.
- Provide management with timely financial information and reporting to support business decisions.
Multi-Entity Accounting & Reporting
- Oversee accounting and financial reporting for multiple affiliated entities, including farming operations, rental properties, land holdings, and other company assets.
- Maintain accurate and separate accounting records for each legal entity while ensuring consistent accounting practices across the organization.
- Prepare entity-level and consolidated financial reports for management review.
- Record, reconcile, and monitor intercompany transactions, balances, loans, reimbursements, and shared expenses.
- Develop and maintain appropriate methods for allocating shared costs across entities, properties, and business operations.
- Monitor financial performance, cash flow, assets, liabilities, and balance sheet activity by entity.
- Maintain clear documentation supporting intercompany activity and entity-level transactions.
- Assist leadership in evaluating the profitability and financial performance of individual entities, properties, farming operations, and investments.
Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable & Cash Management
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable processes across multiple entities.
- Ensure invoices are properly approved, coded, documented, and assigned to the correct entity.
- Maintain vendor payment controls and payment schedules.
- Monitor outstanding receivables and assist with collection efforts when necessary.
- Review and complete bank and credit card reconciliations.
- Monitor cash balances and cash requirements across entities.
- Prepare cash flow forecasts and identify anticipated funding needs.
- Manage and reconcile transfers between affiliated entities.
- Maintain appropriate controls surrounding banking activity and company funds.
Agricultural, Property & Operational Accounting
- Support accounting for farming operations, agricultural projects, land holdings, rental properties, and other company assets.
- Track revenues, expenses, capital expenditures, and profitability by property, project, entity, or operating division.
- Maintain accurate accounting for property improvements, equipment, fixed assets, and other capital expenditures.
- Work with operational teams to improve cost tracking, purchasing documentation, financial reporting, and expense allocation.
- Assist leadership in evaluating operational costs and financial performance across farming and property operations.
- Maintain appropriate records related to rental income, property expenses, maintenance costs, and other real estate activity.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Analysis
- Coordinate the annual budgeting and forecasting process with executive leadership and department managers.
- Prepare budget-to-actual reporting and investigate significant variances.
- Develop financial reports that provide management with meaningful visibility into company, entity, property, and operational performance.
- Prepare short- and long-term cash flow forecasts.
- Assist leadership with financial modeling, scenario analysis, and evaluation of business opportunities.
- Identify financial trends, risks, cost-saving opportunities, and areas for improved performance.
Payroll & Employee-Related Accounting
- Oversee payroll accounting and related general ledger activity.
- Review payroll reports and reconciliations for accuracy.
- Coordinate with internal staff and third-party payroll providers as needed.
- Ensure payroll-related expenses and liabilities are properly recorded and allocated.
- Maintain accurate payroll and employee-related accounting records.
Internal Controls & Process Improvement
- Develop, document, and maintain effective accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Establish appropriate approval processes and segregation of duties.
- Improve accounting workflows and financial reporting processes.
- Maintain organized financial records and supporting documentation.
- Identify opportunities to reduce manual processes and improve accounting efficiency.
- Improve utilization of accounting software and financial reporting systems.
- Develop scalable accounting processes that support continued company growth.
Tax, Audit & Compliance
- Coordinate with outside CPAs, tax advisors, auditors, lenders, insurance providers, and other professional partners.
- Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for annual tax returns, financial reviews, audits, and other reporting requirements.
- Support federal, state, and local tax compliance.
- Assist with applicable property tax, sales and use tax, payroll reporting, 1099 reporting, and other financial compliance requirements.
- Ensure each entity’s accounting records are complete and properly maintained for tax preparation.
- Maintain compliance with lender reporting requirements and financial covenants when applicable.
- Maintain financial documentation in accordance with company record-retention practices.
Qualifications Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Demonstrated experience with multi-entity accounting.
- Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, financial statements, reconciliations, accrual accounting, and month-end close.
- Experience preparing and reviewing financial statements.
- Experience managing or overseeing accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, and payroll accounting.
- Experience handling intercompany transactions and reconciliations.
- Strong understanding of internal accounting controls and financial processes.
- Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to independently manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Ability to communicate financial information clearly to both accounting and non-accounting team members.
- High level of discretion when handling confidential financial and employee information.
Preferred
- CPA, CPA candidate, or equivalent advanced accounting experience.
- Previous Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or similar leadership experience.
- Experience in agriculture, farming, real estate, land management, property management, construction, or another asset-intensive industry.
- Experience accounting for rental properties or real estate assets.
- Experience with consolidated financial reporting.
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial analysis.
- Experience improving accounting systems, processes, or internal controls.

Compensation
The expected salary range for this position is $75,000–$95,000 annually, depending on experience, qualifications, and demonstrated ability to perform the responsibilities of the position.
