The White River Junction Veteran’s Affairs Health Care System (WRJ VA HCS) Research Department conducts groundbreaking research in various healthcare disciplines including Oncology, Cardiology, Mental Health, Neurology, and Gastroenterology, among others.
The WRJ VA HCS Research Department is currently hiring a full-time Research Coordinator who wants to be part of our CONFIRM (Colonoscopy vs. Fecal Immunochemical Test in Reducing Mortality from Colorectal Cancer) CSP #577 team.
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is currently the second most common cause of cancer death in the United States, and one of the most preventable cancers. It has been shown in several randomized controlled trials that screening using fecal occult blood testing (FOBT) reduces CRC mortality by 13-33%. While there is strong consensus amongst experts regarding the value of CRC screening, the best approach to screening is not clear. Of the widely recommended modalities, FOBT and colonoscopy are the most used modalities within the United States. FOBT is inexpensive, non-invasive, and its use as a screening tool is supported by the highest quality evidence (i.e. randomized controlled trials). Moreover, newer FOBT, such as fecal immunochemical tests (FIT), have advantages over conventional FOBT in terms of both test characteristics and ease of use that make them quite attractive as a population-based screening tool. While colonoscopy is invasive and has higher up-front risks and costs than FOBT, it does afford the opportunity to directly assess the colonic mucosa and is widely believed to be the best test to detect colorectal cancer.
There is indirect evidence that suggests colonoscopy is effective in reducing colorectal cancer mortality, but to date, no large clinical trials have been completed to support this assumption. CONFIRMs hypothesis is that colonoscopy will be superior to FIT in the prevention of colorectal cancer mortality measured over 10 years.

Key Duties for all Research Coordinator Positions:
- Recruits candidates for clinical trials.
- Performs day-to-day activities related to conducting and overseeing participant interviews and follow-up visits.
- Develops and maintain study databases.
- Develops, implements, and maintains standard operating procedures and study materials.
- Prepares and tracks institutional review board submissions and other regulatory documents.
- Prepares reports and presentations for local and national research meetings.
- Conduct quality control procedures such as consent form audits, documentation tracking, and data reconciliation and support System-wide research quality control and safety efforts.
- Performs data collection and data entry as described in research protocols.
Qualifications for all Research Coordinator Positions:
- Education Requirements: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

- General Schedule Pay Scale levels 7-9
- Minimum annual salary: $57,150
- Maximum annual salary: $90,882
