POSITION DESCRIPTION

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Reports to: The Board of Directors

Classification: Regular, Full-time, Exempt

General Responsibilities:

The Executive Director is the chief executive officer of The Arc. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives.

Specific Committee Responsibilities:

1. Assure that the organization has a long-range strategy which achieves its mission, and

toward which it makes consistent and timely progress.

2. Provide leadership in developing program, organizational and financial plans with the

Board of Directors and staff and carry out plans and policies authorized by the board.

3. Participate in recruitment of board members and orientation of board members.

4. Attendance at all Board of Directors meeting. The Executive Director will also have a seat

on Executive Committees of the Board of Directors.

5. Promote active and broad participation by volunteers in all areas of the organization’s work.

6. Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.

7. Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field.

In Communications, the Executive Director will:

1. See that the board is kept fully informed on the condition of the organization and all the

important factors influencing it.

2. Publicize the activities of the organization, its programs and goals.

3. Establish sound working relationship and cooperative arrangements with community groups and organizations.

4. Represent the programs and point of view of the organization to agencies, organizations,

media, and the general public.

In Relations with Staff, the Executive Director will:

1. Be responsible for the recruitment, employment, and release of all management personnel, both paid staff and interns.

2. Ensure that recruitment, employment, and release of all support services personnel, both paid staff and interns.

3. Ensure that job descriptions are developed, that regular performance evaluations are held, and that sound human resource practices are in place.

4. See that an effective management team, with appropriate provision for succession, is in

place.

5. Encourage staff and volunteer development and education and assist program staff in

relating their specialized work to the total program of the organization.

6. Maintain a climate that attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff of top-quality people.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

In Budget and Finance, the Executive Director will:

1. Be responsible for developing and maintaining sound financial practices.

2. Work with the staff, Finance Committee, and the board in preparing a budget and see that the organization operates within budget guidelines.

3. Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its work.

4. Develop and implement a fundraising strategy that includes grant writing, special events,

donor solicitation (in-person, email and mail) and planned giving

5. Jointly, with the president and the secretary of the board, conduct official correspondence of the organization, and jointly, with designated officers, execute legal documents.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 Bachelor’s degree in a human services field or equivalent experience

 Familiar with DMAS and DBHDS regulations an asset

 Experience with advocacy, fiscal and personnel management, public relations, grant

development and management, and community collaboration

 Working knowledge of Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and web-based

applications

Language Skills: Must have the ability to:

 Communicate in English

 Write data and complete reports

 Effectively present information and respond to questions from the general public

 Represent The Arc professionally with diverse individuals and groups

Mathematical Skills: Must have the ability to:

 Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical

situations

 Develop and adhere to budgets for development events and activities

Reasoning Ability: Must have the ability to:

 Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations

where only limited standardization exists

 Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule

forms.

 Make decisions and carry them out to their conclusion.

Pay: $65,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
