Reports to Lab Supervisor, Mohs Surgeon and Lab Director

Job Description

Frozen Tissue Handling:

· Receives and organizes incoming specimens

· Label specimens as appropriate with corresponding case number and patient name

· Properly performs grossing techniques to orientate and embed tissues ensuring complete representation of vital surgical margins to maintain proper orientation

· Prepare sections of surgical tissues for immediate in situ examination using rapid tissue freezing

techniques, to cut mount and stain tissue received from surgery.

· Operates the automatic stainer

· Manually Coverslip processed slides

· Distribute slides and maps to surgeon for examination

· Perform initial screening under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets lab requirements.

· Documents daily equipment Quality Control maintenance checks daily

· Maintains manual and electronic logbooks and slide files

· Maintains proper levels of staining solutions in automatic stainer with weekly maintenance.

Dermatopathology Tissue Handling:

· Receives and accessions incoming specimens according to standard operating procedures

· Ensures Specimen is labeled properly

· Properly performs grossing techniques to orientate tissues ensuring complete representation of vital surgical margins to maintain proper orientation

· Properly loads specimens into tissue processor and selects correct cycle for processing

· Properly embeds tissues to orientate tissues ensuring complete representation of vital surgical margins

· Accurately sections tissues on microtome for diagnostic slide staining

· Perpares additional sections as needed for immune staining

· Ensures slides are properly loaded on to the automated stainer for standard diagnostics

· Ensures slides are properly loaded on to the automated immuno stainer, with proper controls and protocol ordered by the surgeon.

· Manually coverslips processed slides

· Presents all slides with all applicable tests ordered and paperwork to the surgeon for diagnostic in a timely organized fashion

· Maintains the tissue processors, embedding center, microtome, water bath and immune stainer daily and ensures a clean work area.

· Documents daily equipment Quality Control and maintenance

Troubleshooting and Professionalism:

· Helps to train and assist new employees as needed

· Prepare reagents, verifies correct instrument operation and cleanliness throughout the laboratory

· Assures the microscope is always in working order, notifies direct supervisor for service when needed

· Helps to maintain working order of laboratory instruments daily, cryostat, grossing area, staining line etc.

· Actively participates in ongoing training and improvement efforts

· Helps to develop, reviews and updated protocols and policies for new instruments and procedures.

· Helps to employ good problem solving and analytical skills

· Helps to Initiate and properly documents troubleshooting and problem solving to resolve the issue

· Helps with the ability to make decisions that are based on specific instructions, standard practices and established procedures which generally require little to no supervision

· Unpack orders received, dates and stock orders, in accordance with established policies and procedures

· Maintains a clean and well- organized wok area

· Ability to function independently and to interact well with, lab supervisor, doctor, patients and other team members

· Provides assistance to lab supervisor, MOHS surgeon, coworkers and other medical personnel regarding patient specimens, test methods etc.

· Continuously maintains courteous, respectful, and cooperative relationships with management, coworkers, patients and office staff.

· Displays a cooperative attitude and efficiently works together to implement the organizations missions and goals

· Accepts changes in tours of duty to provide continual patient services as deemed necessary by laboratory supervisor

· Responds to supervisory request and instruction regarding work assignments, deadlines, and priorities; completes assignments within expected time limits/ tun around times

Compliance and Regulation:

· Assists with assuring lab is in compliance with CLIA regulations

· Demonstrates compliance with current laboratory safety and infection control procedures

· Demonstrates competency in use of standard precautions, safety practices, and hazardous waste management and materials used in department.

· Helps to assist in organization of CLIA laboratory inspection, providing required policies and documentation for compliance

· Assists with ability to create and implement, where to find them and how to interpret them

· Assists to ensure that all new employees and lab trained personnel are in compliance with lab safety protocols

· Assists to ensure that all new employees and lab trained personnel are in compliance with CLIA regulation manual and have read, reviewed and signed off on all policies and procedures

· Helps to assure working environment is consistent with OSHA regulations

Education Requirements:

· Bachelor’s Degree Preferred in Biological Science, Healthcare or Chemistry background, with a combined 12 total credit hours of Biology and Chemistry

· Preferred successful completion of Histology program, but not required.

· Great attention to detail and willingness to train and learn Histology

Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour
