Position Summary
M&J Fabrication is seeking an experienced Certified Welding Inspector to serve as the company’s welding subject-matter expert. This position is responsible for weld quality inspection, development and control of welding procedures and parameters, welder qualification activities, and technical support for welding operations.
The CWI will work closely with Quality, Engineering, Estimating, and Production to ensure welded products comply with applicable drawings, specifications, customer requirements, and welding codes. This is a hands-on position requiring regular interaction with welders and inspection of work throughout the manufacturing process.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform visual and dimensional inspections of weldments before, during, and after welding.
- Verify compliance with applicable drawings, specifications, welding symbols, customer requirements, and welding codes.
- Serve as M&J Fabrication’s primary welding subject-matter expert.
- Develop and document welding parameters for new and existing work.
- Develop, qualify, maintain, and control Welding Procedure Specifications (WPSs), Procedure Qualification Records (PQRs), and supporting documentation.
- Coordinate and oversee procedure qualification testing, welder qualification testing, and continuity records.
- Interpret and apply applicable welding standards, including AWS D17.1, AWS D1.1, and customer-specific requirements.
- Review contracts, drawings, specifications, and purchase orders to identify welding and inspection requirements before production begins.
- Provide welding input during estimating, contract review, planning, and first-article activities.
- Verify that welders are properly qualified for the process, material, thickness, position, and joint configuration being performed.
- Confirm that approved welding procedures and parameters are available and followed on the shop floor.
- Identify weld discontinuities and determine acceptance in accordance with the applicable code or specification.
- Document nonconformances and support root-cause investigations, corrective actions, and repair planning.
- Review and approve weld repair procedures as permitted by applicable requirements.
- Maintain complete and accurate weld inspection, qualification, and traceability records.
- Coordinate required nondestructive testing and review NDT documentation for compliance.
- Conduct welding process audits and monitor shop-floor compliance with established procedures.
- Provide technical guidance and training to welders, supervisors, inspectors, and other personnel.
- Assist Production in resolving weld-quality and manufacturability issues.
- Recommend improvements to welding methods, tooling, equipment, consumables, and process controls.
- Support customer, regulatory, AS9100, and NADCAP audits involving welding activities.
- Remain current on applicable welding codes, industry requirements, and inspection practices.
- Stop or hold work when welding conditions or completed welds do not meet applicable requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector certification.
- Thorough knowledge of welding processes, metallurgy, weld discontinuities, inspection methods, joint design, and welding symbols.
- Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining WPSs, PQRs, welder qualification records, and welding parameters.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, specifications, and manufacturing documentation.
- Working knowledge of visual weld inspection tools and dimensional inspection equipment.
- Ability to interpret and apply AWS welding codes and customer-specific requirements.
- Strong documentation, organization, and recordkeeping skills.
- Ability to communicate technical requirements clearly to welders, production personnel, engineering, quality personnel, customers, and auditors.
- Ability to work independently, identify welding needs in advance, and follow issues through resolution.
- Strong problem-solving skills and sound technical judgment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience inspecting aerospace or defense-related welded products.
- Working knowledge of AWS D17.1 and AWS D1.1.
- Experience in an AS9100 and/or NADCAP-controlled manufacturing environment.
- Experience with GTAW of aluminum, stainless steel, nickel alloys, and carbon steel.
- Experience with GMAW, FCAW, and other welding processes used in industrial fabrication.
- Experience coordinating or reviewing PT, RT, UT, or other nondestructive testing.
- Certified Welding Educator, Level II NDT certification, or additional AWS certifications.
- Experience with robotic or automated welding systems.
- Previous experience training and mentoring production welders.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to spend extended periods working in a manufacturing environment.
- Ability to inspect welds in and around fabricated assemblies, including confined or difficult-to-access areas.
- Ability to bend, kneel, climb, and safely use inspection equipment as required.
- Ability to lift and carry inspection equipment and materials consistent with the needs of the position.
- Ability to use appropriate personal protective equipment while working in production areas.
Work Environment
This position works closely with welding and fabrication operations and may be exposed to welding arcs, fumes, noise, heat, moving equipment, and other typical manufacturing conditions. Appropriate personal protective equipment and adherence to all safety requirements are mandatory.

Pay: $72,724.00 - $97,199.00 per year
