Job purpose
Responsible for enforcing the Massachusetts Electrical Code (based on the National Fire Protection Association National
Electrical Code with state-specific amendments) to ensure the safety and compliance of electrical installations throughout the
city. The electrical inspector performs inspections of residential and commercial properties, working closely with contractors,
electricians, and other city departments to uphold public safety standards. Hours 7:00am – 4:00pm – Monday through
Friday.
Essential Functions
Enforce compliance with Massachusetts Electrical Code and City of Newton regulations.
Review electrical permit applications for completeness and issuance.
Inspect electrical installations for new construction, alterations, and service upgrades as well as other electrical
work. Conduct rough, final and re-inspections for compliance with code.
Identify unsafe or non-compliant installations and require corrective action.
Maintain accurate inspection records and reports in computer systems.
Provide guidance to contractors, electricians, and residents regarding code requirements.
Collaborating with other inspectors and city departments are needed.
Follows and adheres to department, City and other government rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Supervision Received
The employee works under the supervision of the Commissioner of Inspectional Services and direct supervision
of the Senior Wiring Inspector, complying with all applicable policies and procedures administered by the
department. The employee plans and prioritizes the work independently in accordance with standard practices
and training.
Qualifications and Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The

Must possess a valid Massachusetts Master Electrician License. Minimum of 5 years’ experience in electrical
construction. Thorough knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and Massachusetts amendments.
Must have a valid driver’s license.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as reports, electrical and fire plans.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions,
decimals.
Must be able to use a computer. Use and knowledge of Microsoft Excel

THE CITY:

OUR GOVERNMENT:
Newton has what is known as a “strong Mayor” form of government with the Mayor having the executive and administrative powers of the City. The legislative branch is comprised of 24 City Councilors. Mayor Marc C. Laredo was sworn in on January 1, 2026 after serving on the City Council. The City of Newton was evaluated by Moody’s Investors Services in February 2020 and assigned its highest rating of AAA. Newton was thus well-positioned to weather the pandemic and economic downturn.
