Full Job Description

Under the supervision of the Register of Deeds and the appointed Deputy, the clerk is responsible for the performance, according to well-established procedures of clerical tasks. Decisions made are limited to established precedents and departmental policy. Primary responsibilities include: recording legal documents in numerical indices and cadastral maps, assisting the public and other governmental agencies with information requests, computer input, and scanning.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Maintain various records and cadastral maps which require attention to accuracy.
Maintain files according to predetermined classification.
Operate typewriter, calculator, copy machine, PCs & other simple office machines.
Assist public and other governmental agencies with information requests according to established policy.
Responsible for computer input, printing reports, and other computer-related work.
First person to answer incoming calls, transfer calls, or assist with information requests.
Accept documents presented for filing and recording.
Calculate and collect statutory fees and Nebraska Documentary Stamp Tax Revenue.
Proof computer input information, which includes fees and all of the document information.
Maintain daily bookwork. Balance cash on hand with the required balance and prepare bank deposits.
Assist public and other governmental agencies with information requests. Create and maintain good working relationships with the public, professional, and government offices.
Responsible for proofreading clerical work of office staff which includes numerical indexing, computer records, cadastral maps, and other records as required.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

Assist other office staff with work if an overflow occurs.
Maintain working knowledge of functions of the office.
Perform related work as required

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of training and/or work experience that enables the individual to possess the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
A general qualification guideline for the position is the successful completion of a year of related office experience and any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
Knowledge of modern office methods and procedures.
Knowledge of the operation of various simple office machines.
Knowledge of basic bookkeeping procedures.
Ability to type at a rate necessary to perform job requirements.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, other agencies, and other employees.
Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
Ability to perform record-keeping functions.
Ability to operate computer and printer.
Knowledge of legal descriptions, i.e., the ability to read and map a legal description preferred.
Computer experience preferred.

ESSENTIAL DEMANDS & TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Normal office hazards are encountered: stooping & moderately heavy lifting. Occasional lifting of heavy books from heights.
Hours are generally 9:00-5:00, with some flexibility, Monday through Friday with 1 hour lunch.

Pay: $18.00 - $19.00 per hour
