Ophthalmic Technician

Report to

Director of Clinical Operations

Responsibilities

Ophthalmic assistants work closely with ophthalmologists. Position requires good understanding of ophthalmic practice and patient care. Knowledge of medical instrumentation and its proper care and usage needed. Ability to assess common safety hazards and take precautions to establish a safe work environment required. Ability to communicate with patients, co-workers and manager is critical. Must be willing to help in all areas and understand the need for efficient use of time.

List of Responsibilities/Duties

Promptly and professionally assists the doctor in patient care.
Performing technical workups, patient histories and special testing.
Communicates with patients regarding follow-up care, surgeries, procedures,

changes in schedule, symptoms, surgery scheduling, etc.

Maintains and cleans all equipment being used. Report to Equipment

Coordinator if not in working condition.

Returning phone calls to patients and pharmacies in a timely manner.
Assists in minor surgery.
Efficiently and accurately interview patients and documents histories.
Accurately performs:
History taking
Visual acuity measurement
Refractometry (measurements for the glasses prescription)
Retinoscopy
Lensometry
Tonometry (measure eye pressure)
Measure pupil size and reactivity
Test and measure eye muscle function
Visual field testing
Keratometry
Amsler test
Corneal thickness measurement
Corneal curvature measurement
Corneal topography
Retinal nerve fiber layer measurement
Retinal thickness and topography
Fluorescein angiography
A and B-scan ultrasonography
IOL Master
Tear Lab
Keratograph
Meaningful Use
Assist with contact lens fitting, and patient instruction
Prepare for and assist with in-office procedures
Surgical assisting
EMR system
Scribes readily when doctor desires.

Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the

discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.

Extra information

All the technicians need to travel to every location.

All the technicians need to be in clinic 15 minutes before the clinic start

Education Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Successful completion of JCAHPO Certified Ophthalmic Assistant ( no requirement)
