Housing Advocate

Honolulu, HI | Full Time | $50,000/ year

About the Role

The Housing Advocate will support survivors of domestic violence in locating, securing, and maintaining safe and affordable housing. This role combines direct client advocacy with system navigation-assisting participants through housing applications, referrals, landlord relations, and post-placement support. The Housing Navigator plays a vital role in empowering survivors to build stability and independence while fostering connections with community partners, landlords, and support services.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, or related field OR at least two (2) years of experience working with survivors of domestic violence and/or individuals/families experiencing homelessness.
Basic knowledge of domestic violence dynamics and current housing practices for people experiencing homelessness.
Strong ability to connect with individuals from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced nonprofit environment.
Flexible schedule availability to meet client and program needs.

Bonus skills we value:

Experience in crisis intervention and long-term client advocacy.
Knowledge of local housing resources and public subsidies.
Familiarity with the justice system and Oʻahu’s social service network.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct thorough assessments of survivor participants’ housing needs, barriers, and eligibility.
Support clients in the housing search, application, and placement process, including referrals to subsidies and community programs.
Maintain a caseload of up to 36 clients, with updated case plans and assessments.
Provide ongoing post-placement support to promote housing retention and safety.
Administer risk assessments, safety planning, and crisis intervention services as needed.
Accompany clients to housing appointments, interviews, and court hearings when appropriate.
Advocate with landlords, institutions, and agencies while encouraging survivor self-advocacy through an empowerment-based model.
Staff DVAC’s Helpline, providing immediate support, assessment, and referrals.
Ensure strict confidentiality and compliance with DVAC policies and survivor-centered practices.
Track and report service statistics, attend required trainings, and participate in case review meetings.
