Position Purpose
Success Seminar is a block in each student’s schedule that may be used for academic study, to make up tests or IPS activities, to sit in on missed instruction, to complete computer-based credit recovery, or to meet with counselors or office staff. Students in grades 10, 11, or 12 may be eligible for flexible scheduling options in lieu of Success Seminar. For 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students, Success Seminar is pass/fail and bears no credit.
All 9th grade students are required to take Freshman Success Seminar each semester, which will be used to teach skills and provide resources to aid in the successful transition between middle school and high school. Topics may include but are not limited to: exploring clubs & activities, study skills, time management and school-life balance, organization, device use and care, communication strategies and email etiquette, stress management, goal setting, understanding credits and transcripts, and beginning post-secondary planning. Some of the class time will also be used to work on assignments, make up tests or quizzes, or meet with the counselors, other teachers, or administrators as needed. Freshman Success Seminar is pass/fail and earns .25 credit per semester. Daily points will be awarded for participation and meeting classroom expectations, and students must maintain an average of 80% or higher to earn a passing grade.
All Success Seminar paras will maintain a productive and respectful learning environment, coordinate with teachers to provide academic support, mentor students in developing habits of successful learners, provide tutoring when appropriate, and other duties as assigned. These staff member will also serve the HHS community by providing a safe environment in all common areas including the cafeteria, hallways, and parking lot, as well as floating to our In-School Solutions/Student Support room as needed.
The Success Seminar paras have a set class schedule, which allows them to build professional relationships with the students under their supervision, and they take daily assignments from their Success Seminar supervisors, ultimately reporting to the building administrator overseeing the Success Seminar program.
Hays School District has about 3,000 students that are enrolled in a high school, middle school, four elementary schools, and an alternative school. The staff of Unified School District No. 489 are recognized throughout Kansas and across the nation as leaders in educational excellence.

An extensive special education program serves children with special needs. Early childhood programs serve children and their families in a three-county area from before-birth to age six. Technology, throughout the district, is used to supplement and strengthen the instructional program. The most noticeable aspect of our technology is in our ratio of students to computers. At Hays High and the middle schools it is 1:1; and 2:1 in the elementary schools.
While doing an excellent job on the test score race, the staff continues to seek to develop the creativity, curiosity, and problem solving skills of students as well. The challenges of the future are best dealt with by applying creativity and foresight to a solid foundation. We are equipped at USD 489.
