St. Paul’s United Methodist Church

Job Description: Communications, Outreach and Marketing Coordinator

Summary

The Communications, Outreach and Marketing Coordinator (COM) creatively leads the communications and marketing efforts of St. Paul's United Methodist Church while supporting the church's education, outreach, and community engagement ministries. This position is responsible for developing and maintaining the church's public presence across social media, digital and print communications, website content, advertising, and other media, while also helping connect members and the broader community with the ministries and opportunities of the church.

Being in the downtown area, the church office receives many visitors, including some of our underserved and unhoused population. The COM must be able to communicate well, problem solve and maintain a calm demeanor in all situations.

This role requires strong social media skills, communication skills, creativity, independence, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities. The COM also provides support for office duties as needed and works collaboratively with other staff, volunteers, committee leaders, and the public. While each staff member has specific responsibilities, the team works collectively to create a cohesive and welcoming environment for all who interact with SPUMC.

The COM should also become familiar with the committees and ministries of SPUMC.

Reports to: Senior Pastor and SPRC Chair
Attends: Church Council, All-Church meetings, and Staff meetings

Hours & Compensation

Hours: Part-time - 30 hrs/week, 12 months
Wage: $20.00/hour
Benefits: Sick leave, vacation, holidays

Responsibilities

Communication

Communicate with staff, clergy, and groups to stay informed about upcoming events/activities.
Advertise events/activities on church social media platforms weekly or as needed.
Coordinate with worship leaders, speakers, and musicians each week to gather and organize information for the Sunday worship bulletin and e-newsletter.
Create and publish the weekly E-Newsletter and Sunday worship bulletins.
Manage the communications calendar, secure and edit content from volunteers and staff.
Maintain accurate newsletter mailing lists.
Facilitate mailing of weekly hard-copy sermons to shut-ins and those without digital access.
Coordinate announcements with online worship staff for worship slides, newsletters, and e-blasts.
Participate in meetings related to education, outreach, and community engagement as needed to support coordination and communication.

Marketing

Build and manage social media presence (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, and other relevant channels).
Develop and implement a robust organic social media strategy (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok) to increase engagement, reach, and visibility, including weekly posting and community management.
Identify potential markets for advertising.
Build brand awareness through multiple media outlets.
Design and oversee ad layouts.
Drive consistent, relevant traffic and leads from the church’s online presence.
Update and maintain the church website content.

Outreach/Education

Schedule and recruit leaders for classes and workshops (4–8 week classes at various times).
Coordinate classes based on sermon series, lectures, or ministry priorities.
Partner with congregation members, local organizations, and the Helena community for teaching opportunities.
Advertise classes, register participants, and coordinate guest speakers.
Order materials and books as needed.
Train and equip leaders with technology and resources.
Track enrollments, communicate with instructors, and set up online options (Zoom).
Administer course evaluation surveys.

Office Support

Assist with reception and phone support.
Order supplies (custodial, office, worship, fellowship) in coordination with the Office and Facilities Coordinator (OFC).
Run errands for office/facility needs in coordination with the OFC.
Provide scheduling backup when OFC is unavailable.
Cover and share duties with the OFC as needed for sick or vacation days.
Assist with door lock scheduling in coordination with the OFC.

Qualifications

Experience in communications, marketing, media, or related field preferred.
Experience creating content for social media platforms.
Experience with creating graphics.
Willingness and ability to learn new software programs.
Knowledge of or willingness to learn Fellowship One Go Church Management software.
Knowledge of or willingness to learn MailChimp for mass mailings.
Proficient in writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
Detail-oriented, organized, and able to multitask.
Ability to maintain confidentiality, professional demeanor, and appropriate boundaries.
Familiarity with church, nonprofit, or ministry communications.
Positive attitude, strong sense of ethics, and commitment to the mission of SPUMC.
Willingness to go above and beyond to accomplish job duties.

Conditions of Employment

Must satisfactorily pass a criminal background check.
