Helena College is seeking qualified applicants who wish to become part of a dynamic and creative team for a Quarter 19 hour/bi-weekly (23.75 FTE) position as a
Custodian II.
The Custodian II works under the general supervision of the and is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and secure learning environment for students, employees, and visitors. This position performs routine and specialized custodial services in academic, administrative, and common-use facilities in accordance with Helena College custodial procedures and established facility service standards.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
Helena College maintains custodial service levels consistent with recognized higher education facility standards, targeting
APPA Level 2-3 cleanliness (ordinary Tidiness to Casual Inattention). Custodial services prioritize health, sanitation, safety, appearance, and operational continuity throughout all assigned facilities.
The Custodian II performs assigned duties according to a structured schedule of
daily, weekly, monthly, and periodic tasks, including enhanced cleaning activities during academic peaks and special events. Responsibilities include sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, scrubbing, buffing, and maintain floors; disinfecting and sanitizing classrooms, offices, restrooms, laboratories, and common areas; emptying trash and recycling containers; dusting surfaces; and restocking paper products, soap, and other custodial supplies. The position is responsible for ensuring assigned areas are consistently maintained in a clean, orderly, and sanitary condition.
In addition to routine custodial duties, the Custodian II performs cyclical and deep-cleaning activities, including window cleaning, carpet extraction, floor refinishing, and other specialized cleaning projects. The position may also assist with snow and ice removal, event setup and teardown, furniture moving, and other facilities support activities as assigned.
The Custodian II is responsible for maintaining the security of assigned buildings and work areas while on shift, reporting maintenance concerns and safety hazards, and following established environmental health and safety procedures. The position operates, maintains, and performs routing servicing of custodial equipment and tools; organizes custodial storage areas and supply locker; and develops proficiency in the operation and maintenance of janitorial equipment.
On Occasion, the Custodian II may provide lead work direction and task coordination for
Custodian I employees and student workers, including assigning work, providing training on custodial procedures, monitoring work quality, and assisting with the completion of departmental projects. This position serves as an experienced custodial resource and helps ensure that custodial services are delivered efficiently and consistently across campus.
Custodial
Provide daily cleaning of the campus buildings and its contents to industry and department standards.
Record Keeping
Prepares reports and documents pertaining to maintenance, supplies, project cleaning and physical inventories
Security
Provide basic security for buildings by locking doors, windows and checking for and reporting maintenance problems. Report hazardous situations and obtain assistance for distressed people.
Interact with campus community and general public
Perform project work with large and small teams. Work with other university departments as required. Work with faculty, students, kitchen staff, and the general public at all times with patience, courtesy, and respect.
This position will work effectively at both our Donaldson and Airport campuses.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma (or equivalent) and six (6) months of custodial, janitorial, building maintenance, or related experience; or
- GED and one (1) year of custodial, janitorial, building maintenance, or related experience; or

One (1) year of custodial, janitorial, building maintenance, facilities support, housekeeping, or closely related work experience; or
-
Any equivalent combination of education, training, certifications, and experience that demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.
- The ability to perform constant and heavy physical activity capable of lifting 80 pounds.
- Knowledge of custodial cleaning techniques, supplies and equipment; skilled in cleaning all types of physical environments; skilled in cleaning all types of floor materials; ability/willing to learn and perform specialized cleaning techniques; ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; must be skilled in time management; ability to maintain an organized, safe work environment; ability to work with little supervision, must be able to perform constant physical activity and heavy lifting and carrying.

Requires flexible working hours to support business operations, Monday through Sunday, as requested by supervisor.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Ability to perform constant, heavy physical activity; ability to transport, set-up and work from scaffolds and ladders. Must be able to shovel snow. Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions. Hazards include exposure to extreme heat, cold and occasional wind; exposure to cleaning chemicals and supplies, blood borne pathogens; slippery surfaces, live equipment, heavy lifting and carrying (up to 80 pounds) working alone at night.
- This position can require you to report early or stay late for snow removal, resulting in a longer than normal 8-hour work day (overtime compensation in accordance with Montana Code Annotated.)

Additional Information
Work Schedule: Quarter-time, 23.75 FTE (9.5 hours a week), Monday through Saturday or as determined by the College. This position will work effectively at both our Donaldson (1115 North Roberts Street, Helena, MT) and Airport (2300 Airport Road, Helena, MT) campuses. These days/hours are subject to change.
