Full Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

A School-Based Outpatient Therapist (SBOT) provides both population-level and individual mental health supports to students at their assigned school. To do so successfully, an SBOT must possess a capacity for empathy, an attitude of cultural humility and sensitivity, an understanding of child and adolescent development, knowledge of developmentally appropriate clinical interventions, effective communication skills, and an ability to engage in a multi-disciplinary team. An SBOT utilizes a combination of group, individual and family interventions to effect treatment progress for individual clients. An SBOT frequently interacts with school staff and should seek to collaborate with school personnel to support access to mental health services for all students. At a population health level, an SBOT may provide education, consultation and guidance or support to school personnel. An SBOT needs to be able to maintain professional boundaries and effectively care for their own mental health. An SBOT must be able to complete all job tasks with limited oversight as they are working from a remote location with off-site supervision.

DUTIES, ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Coordinate with school personnel to identify students in need of school-based mental health counseling through attendance at A-team meetings.

As identified by the A-team, provide social-emotional interventions to school-identified, targeted groups of students with parent permission.

Provide developmentally appropriate and culturally informed clinical services (individual, group and family) to an identified caseload of students within the assigned school building.

Complete all necessary clinical documentation, including biopsychosocial assessments, progress notes, treatment plans, and discharge summaries in a timely manner that is concise and meets regulatory requirements.

Coordinate with HIA staff to complete referrals to community and clinical services as necessary and/or requested by students and families.

Upon school or district request, provide professional development learning opportunities for school district staff regarding youth mental health and wellness.

As necessary and requested, provide consultation and guidance to school staff and faculty during a student crisis situation.

If present within the assigned school building, maintain a physical space for the student population to access self-regulating activities.

Engage in ongoing communication and coordination with additional members of a student’s care team, including parents.

Plan and implement community and social services and maintain and develop outreach activities.

Assist with grant development and implementation process.

Participate in annual district and school-specific orientation and other school district training as appropriate. District required training and meetings.

Promote and support HIA through other activities in fundraising, professional representation, and public appearances

Attend monthly staff meetings and education and training opportunities

Additional duties as assigned by supervisor and/or Executive Director

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND USE OF EQUIPMENT

To perform this job successfully, an individual must work effectively independently and in a team environment.

Establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with other employees and public

Requires proven professionalism and the ability to deal effectively with patients, families, caregivers and a variety of internal and external resources.

Ability to work in team-based care and work in an integrated way to improve client outcomes.

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED OR PREFERRED)

Master’s degree in psychology or counseling or social work from a CACREP (Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs) or CSWE (Council of Social Work) accredited school.

Three years of counseling experience in public, Tribal, or private services agency preferred.

Good understanding of Native American cultural competence

Current certification in CPR with AED. May be completed within 3 months of employment

Valid Montana Driver’s License with a driving record that will allow coverage on the center’s insurance policy.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is performed in a medical and behavioral health office and clinic setting; sitting, with intermittent standing and walks; reaches for and uses writing instruments and keyboard; reads reports and other written materials; extensive use of telephone and oral communication with the public and coworkers; stoops, bends, kneels, reaches for, picks up, and pushes or pulls; ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

All employees of Helena Indian Alliance may have contact with patients, families, visitors who may be physically debilitated, have mental or psychological conditions, or may be under the influence of a substance. Employees' work areas include the entire facility and its property. Employees will interact with the entire staff throughout the facility. The position may be working off-site, and after hours and weekends as necessary.

All employees are at risk of physical injury from lifting, transferring, or moving objects, or from assisting patients. Employees with driving privileges are at risk of a motor vehicle accident.
