Definition:
As a member of an educational and clinical team, the Occupational Therapist provides assessment and identification of student needs in the area of neurological and orthopedic disorders and fine motor and sensory integration deficits. In consultation and collaboration with parents and Beacon Day School’s interdisciplinary team, develops goals and objectives for consideration in the individualized education program (IEP), develops individual occupational therapy intervention plans, and maintains appropriate documentation and reports.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Essential duties and responsibilities of this class include but are not limited to:
- Evaluates students using standardized tests, observation, and/or clinically derived surveys in areas including perceptual motor skills, motor coordination, sensory development, and muscle strength
- Devises a treatment program aimed at improving the identified areas of function, as they relate to the child’s educational needs
- Participates in the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meeting to develop/update goals and objectives and is responsible for providing direct service and/or consultation toward meeting the established goals
- Documents findings, actions taken, and/or recommendations made regarding area of service; maintains and organizes records as required by the Department, and identified by program needs
- Acts as liaison to Beacon Day School staff, physicians, parents, district personnel, and other agencies in implementing a treatment plan, providing collaborative and consulting services.
- Provides training for staff in area of specialty, and participates in local and state presentations as necessary
- Assess for, update, and maintain student durable medical equipment
- Consults with district personnel for the use and maintenance of student Assistive Technology
- Supervises COTA and COTA students in internship program
- Re-evaluate students’ individual occupation therapy plans on a regular basis
- Attends related meetings and conferences
- Performs related duties as assigned
Knowledge and Skills
- Plan, organize and conduct an occupational therapy program for neuromuscular and/or orthopedically involved children
- Develop, implement, and monitor individualized sensory strategies for students
- Respond to questions, inquiries and complaints from parents, students, teachers and representatives from Beacon Day School and other school districts
- Explain and educate the process and procedures as they apply to the occupational therapy program
- Make accurate assessments of the developmental status and educational needs of young children
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work
- Collaborate and consult effectively with teachers and staff regarding student needs in the classroom
- Prepare reports and keep organized case records
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Observe health and safety regulations
- Work cooperatively with others

Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited school of Occupational Therapy
- Certification with the National Board of Certification in Occupational Therapy is desired
- Possess and maintain a valid California Occupational Therapy license
- One year of appropriate school-based experience as an occupational therapist is preferred
- Valid Registration with the American Occupational Therapy Association
Physical Requirements
- Will engage in movements that involve lifting equipment used in patient care, etc.
- May be exposed to infectious diseases and human waste products.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. at times.
Work is performed under normal office or classroom conditions, but there are some minimal environmental risks or disagreeable conditions associated with the work. Employees must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of a position with or without reasonable accommodation and without being a danger to themselves or others. Must meet all Pro-ACT standards and safety requirements (light duty is not available).
