POSITION SUMMARY
Our dermatopathology laboratory is seeking a Pathology Grossing Technician to
perform accessioning, macroscopic description, and dissection of dermatologic
surgical specimens under the supervision of a board-certified pathologist. This
is a new laboratory, and the person in this role will help establish grossing
protocols, workflow, and quality standards from the ground up. Specimen volume
is predominantly dermatologic, including shave and punch biopsies, excisions,
re-excisions, and Mohs-related specimens.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Receive, verify, and accession incoming surgical specimens, confirming
two-point patient identification, requisition completeness, specimen
integrity, laterality, and site designation against the requisition.
2. Perform gross examination, measurement, description, inking, orientation,
sectioning, and dissection of dermatologic specimens in accordance with the
laboratory grossing manual and under the supervision of the pathologist.
3. Dictate or enter accurate gross descriptions into the laboratory information
system, including specimen dimensions, lesion characteristics, margin
inking scheme, and block designation.
4. Prepare and label cassettes, maintain accurate specimen-to-block-to-slide
traceability, and ensure chain of custody throughout processing.
5. Escalate discrepancies, unexpected findings, mislabeled or compromised
specimens, and any specimen requiring pathologist review prior to
dissection, in accordance with laboratory policy.
6. Maintain, calibrate, and clean grossing station equipment, including
downdraft ventilation, and document maintenance per laboratory schedule.
7. Handle, store, and dispose of formalin and other hazardous chemicals in
compliance with laboratory safety guidelines and applicable OSHA standards.
8. Participate in initial and ongoing competency assessment, proficiency
activities, quality control, and documentation required to support the
laboratory's regulatory obligations.
9. Assist with specimen retention, storage, and disposal in accordance with
retention policy.
10. Support accreditation and licensure readiness, including inspection
preparation and correction of identified deficiencies.
11. Perform other laboratory duties within the scope of certification as
assigned by the Laboratory Director or designee.
SUPERVISION AND SCOPE OF PRACTICE
This position performs only those procedures authorized in writing by the
Laboratory Director, consistent with the individual's Nevada certification
category and documented competency. All gross dissection is performed under
pathologist supervision. This position does not render diagnoses and does not
sign out cases.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Current certification issued by the State of Nevada, Division of Public and
Behavioral Health, in one of the following categories: Pathologist's
Assistant (NAC 652.452), Histotechnologist (NAC 652.433), or Histologic
Technician (NAC 652.437). Candidates eligible for Nevada certification who
have not yet been issued a certificate may be considered; certification must
be issued prior to independent performance of any duty requiring it.
2. Demonstrated hands-on grossing experience with surgical specimens. Prior
dermatopathology grossing experience strongly preferred.
3. Ability to meet, or to document substantial equivalence to, California
clinical laboratory personnel requirements applicable to the complexity of
testing performed, as required for examination of specimens originating in
California.
4. Working knowledge of laboratory safety practices, bloodborne pathogen
precautions, and formaldehyde handling.
5. Accurate, detail-oriented work under production volume and turnaround time
expectations.
6. Proficiency with laboratory information systems and accurate data entry.
7. Legally authorized to work in the United States.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. PA(ASCP), HTL(ASCP), or HT(ASCP) certification.
2. Graduate of a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists' Assistant program or a CAAHEP
or CAHEA accredited histotechnology program.
3. Experience in a laboratory operating under CAP accreditation.
4. Experience establishing grossing protocols or standing up a new laboratory.
5. Familiarity with Mohs surgery specimen handling and margin orientation.
6. Bilingual English and Spanish.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed at a grossing station in a laboratory environment with
regular exposure to formalin, xylene, alcohols, and other laboratory reagents,
and to human tissue and potentially infectious material. Requires the use of
personal protective equipment at all times, including gloves, eye protection,
laboratory coat, and other equipment as specified. Requires the safe use of
scalpels and other sharp instruments. Requires standing for extended periods,
fine motor dexterity, color vision sufficient to evaluate tissue and inking,
and the ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made
