ORGANIZATION SUMMARY

Crossroads Campus is a Nashville-based 501(c)(3) founded in 2010. We educate and empower people to take care of their pets, find loving homes for dogs and cats, and offer affordable housing and job training for vulnerable young adults ages 18-25. Our core values guide every aspect of our work:

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Animal Behavior & Humane Education is responsible for the oversight and management of Crossroads Campus' animal welfare programming, including our Caring Connections Humane Education Program and our Animal Care and Adoptions Program. This is a critical leadership role representing Crossroads to the broader community and furthering the mission of the organization.

This position provides direct supervision for our Animal Care and Adoptions staff and ensures alignment between animal welfare operations and the organization's humane education and job training mission.

The Director will support the growth of the organization through expansion of our humane education outreach program, Caring Connections, and the integration of animal behavior and training into daily animal care operations — providing enrichment for our adoptable pets and skill-building opportunities for the young adults in our job training program who assist with their daily care. Additionally, the Director will lead the future development of a dog training social enterprise to provide training support for pet fosters and adopters while enhancing job skills training for program participants.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

LEADERSHIP & STAFF MANAGEMENT

● Supervise, coach, and develop Animal Care and Adoptions staff

● Foster a trauma-informed, inclusive, and team-oriented culture

● Align Animal Programs with organizational strategy and values

● Collaborate with leadership on planning, marketing, fundraising, and community engagement

● Build and maintain partnerships that support program goals

PROGRAM OVERSIGHT & DEVELOPMENT

● Provide supervision and accountability for the Animal Care and Adoptions team, ensuring high standards of welfare and safety

● Design and implement dog training and enrichment programs within the kennel

● Design and implement cat enrichment programs within our cat adoption space

● Engage young adults in hands-on training, handling, and enrichment activities

● Integrate job training goals into animal care programming

● Expand and manage humane education and outreach initiatives, including Caring Connections

● Provide humane education, dog training, and Caring Connections related content for newsletters, social media, the website and events

● Provide back-up coverage for the Animal Care and Adoptions Manager as needed

● Develop and implement a dog-training social enterprise

● Track outcomes, evaluate programs, and drive continuous improvement

TRAINING & OUTREACH

● Deliver humane education and training to staff, participants, volunteers, and the community

● Ensure consistent use of positive reinforcement and LIMA-based practices

● Represent Crossroads Campus at community events and outreach opportunities

● Contribute content for marketing, communications, and fundraising efforts

OPERATIONAL SUPPORT

● Support foster and community-based animal programs

● Assist with grant writing, reporting, and program documentation

● Ensure coordination across Animal Care, Adoptions, and Young Adult program team

QUALIFICATIONS

● 5-8 years of relevant work experience

● Bachelor’s degree preferred but may be waived based on experience and credentialing

● 3 or more years of successful management and supervision experience

● Humane Education Credentialing (e.g., Certified Humane Education Specialist through the Association for Animal Welfare Advancement or similar)

● Dog Training Certification (e.g., KPA through the Karen Pryor Academy, CCPDT from the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, Certified Behavior Consultant or Accredited Dog Training through the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC) or similar

● An ability to connect animals and people in meaningful ways

● Demonstrated ability to communicate humane and behavior topics across a variety of audiences using Least Intrusive Minimally Aversive (LIMA) approaches

● Ability to create and manage to a budget

● General knowledge in the areas of trauma informed care, positive youth development, and animal welfare

● Ability to lift, push, pull at least 40 lbs.

COMPENSATION

$70,000 to $80,000
