GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK
This is an entry-level technical position responsible for assisting in the operation and maintenance of equipment and facilities at the wastewater treatment plant. Work includes performing routine preventive maintenance tasks, assisting with basic mechanical and electrical repairs, conducting inspections, cleaning and lubricating equipment, and supporting troubleshooting efforts under the direction of senior staff. The employee is expected to develop technical proficiency in pumps, valves, and related plant equipment while adhering to established safety standards and operating procedures.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- Performs routine scheduled maintenance of equipment.
- Maintains records of maintenance activities.
- Reports need for and documents major equipment repairs.
- Monitors status of various equipment adjusts, and repairs as needed, reports equipment status and condition to supervisor.
- Assesses wear and condition of electrical, mechanical, and electronic equipment and components and makes recommendations to their supervisor regarding repair or replacement.
- Conducts maintenance addressing preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance on mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment in the Sewer Department.
- Conducts installation, maintenance, repair servicing of mechanical and electrical equipment, components, machinery, and facilities in plants, pumping stations, storage tanks, and distribution or collection system.
- Performs repairs to maintenance of structures at the treatment plants and, in the distribution, or collection system.
- Operates skid steer and telehandler.
- Operates dump trucks and at times may be required to operate Vactor trucks.
- Groundskeeping and maintenance.
- Welding repair to metal structures and process equipment.
- Reviews the operation of equipment and systems continually to minimize unplanned down time, anticipates and solves problems in a timely manner, and identifies opportunities for improvement.
- Maintains inventory of parts and equipment; makes recommendations for purchases or replacements.
- This position is required to work overtime from time to time, as needed.
- May be asked to respond to calls for repairs outside of normal work hours.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this role.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Must have ability to understand wastewater equipment such as preliminary, secondary, solids handling, and disinfection.
- Must have ability to read and interpret documents, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to perform calculations as necessary for maintenance records.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Knowledge of equipment maintenance and operating practices.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
- Ability to inspect machinery, electrical, and instrumentation in operation and detect flaws.

- Ability to utilize and keep digital records on provided asset tracking software platform.
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time under unfavorable climatic conditions.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Basic math operations addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division Decimals, fractions, and percentages. Measurement conversions in length, weight, and volume units (e.g., gallons to pounds).
EDUCATION
A high diploma or G.E.D is required.
Technical training from an accredited trade school, community college, or approved apprenticeship program in industrial maintenance, electrical systems, mechanical technology, instrumentation, or a related field is preferred.
Must obtain the appropriate certifications within 24 months of employment and maintain certifications in good standing.
EXPERIENCE
Must have a minimum of one year’s experience operating equipment (i.e. loaders, backhoes, crane, maintainers.) Experience in a water or wastewater treatment plant preferred.
DRIVER LICENSE
Must hold a valid Tennessee Driver’s License and clear driving record and ability to obtain a Class B commercial driver's license within 12 months of employment.
AVAILABILITY REQUIREMENTS
Given the critical infrastructure role of the facility and the need to maintain essential staffing during events such as severe weather, power outages, or other emergency conditions, employees in this position must be available to work rotating shifts, including 24/7 assignments. This position is subject to on-call and call-back requirements, which may include work outside of normal business hours, including days, nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays. The employee must be available to participate in a rotating on-call schedule and may be required to report to duty or remain onsite during emergency operations.
RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS
Due to the on-call and emergency response nature of this position, the ideal candidate should reside in Wilson County or in one of the surrounding counties that border Wilson County, including Cannon, Davidson, DeKalb, Rutherford, Smith, Sumner, or Trousdale Counties.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS, WORK ENVIROMENT, AND REASONABLE RECOMMENDATIONS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is required to walk; sit; use tools; operate controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and listen, observe, or smell. The employee must frequently lift, move, push, pull or carry up to 50 pounds. May occasionally push, pull or move 75 to 100 pounds, with assistance. Must be able to use tools such as breaker bar, pipe wrench, hand truck. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to raw sewage, fumes and airborne particles. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious and confined spaces; and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to hot, cold, wet and/or humid conditions and toxic or hazardous chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The wastewater treatment plant is a 24-hour operation, and this position is also subject to be on-call and may be called back to work in the event of an emergency (i.e. inclement weather events, emergency equipment maintenance and repairs).
Must undergo required physical examination and complete vaccinations.
