Position Summary
The ideal candidate must be highly motivated, quick to learn, keep a positive attitude and be willing to work until the task is completed.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):
- Independently diagnoses, repairs, and maintains a fleet of semi-trucks and trailers, including diesel engines, transmissions, drivetrains, air brake systems, suspension, steering, electrical systems, and all related components.
- Performs preventive maintenance services including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacements, brake repairs, and DOT inspections.
- Conducts thorough safety inspections on trucks and trailers per FMCSA/DOT regulations.
- Performs 5-volt CAN and 12-volt electrical diagnosis, troubleshooting, and repair on trucks, trailers, and auxiliary equipment (including lighting, wiring, and refrigeration units where applicable).
- Repairs and replaces truck and trailer tires, including large commercial tires.
- Documents all work performed, parts used, and repairs completed via TATEMS (or current fleet management system) work orders.
- Performs welding and fabrication work using MIG and Arc welding processes on truck and trailer components as needed.
- Operates hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop machinery after proper certification and training.
- Reports machinery, tool, or equipment defects or malfunctions to the Maintenance Manager.
- Maintains a neat, clean, and organized work area.
- Operates all tools and equipment in a safe manner following all safety protocols.
- Attends safety tailgates, training sessions, and other meetings as required.
- Must follow all company safety policies and procedures and immediately report all accidents or incidents to the Maintenance Manager or Safety Department.
- Assists co-workers as needed and performs other duties as assigned.
- Regular attendance is an essential function of the job.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Strong mechanical aptitude with advanced knowledge of heavy-duty diesel trucks, semi-trailers, and related systems.
- Ability to understand and follow technical manuals, service bulletins, wiring diagrams, and blueprints.
- Proficient in the use of diagnostic tools and equipment for diesel engines and truck/trailer systems.
- Demonstrates a strong passion for mechanical work and problem-solving.
- Experience with air brake systems, ABS, and suspension repair
- Ability to weld all types of metals using MIG and Arc welding processes (preferred).
- Ability to repair and replace large commercial truck and trailer tires.
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
- Minimum of 5+ years of experience as a diesel truck or semi-trailer mechanic
- ASE certifications (Medium/Heavy Duty, Brakes, Electrical, etc.) a plus.
Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to communicate with fellow employees and must be able to exchange accurate information. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing for extended periods. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items up to 50 pounds. Must be able to visually inspect parts and machinery from a distance and up close. Must be able to work in various weather conditions when working on vehicles outdoors.
Other Criteria:
- For insurance purposes, candidates must have a clean driving record and a valid driver’s license (CDL preferred but not required).
