Full Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for providing comprehensive vision care to patients so they can care for their eyes and access tools to support their vision. Duties include conducting eye examinations, identifying signs of disease or injury, and prescribing corrective lenses.

ESSENTIALS SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
In-depth knowledge and skills of optometry are essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to this position. Demonstrated ability to perform moderately complex optometric examinations including visual acuity, pupillary examination, confrontation visual fields, tonometry, evaluation of muscle balance, stereopsis, phorias, vergences, retinoscopy, slit lam examination, lensometry, indirect ophthalmoscopy, fundus photography and other relevant examination components.
Demonstrated ability to perform subjective refractions for ophthalmology patients.
Must possess skills to provide directions, instructions, information, and guidance to less experienced staff members.
Must be able to work in a highly collaborative manner with staff, physicians, and members of our healthcare community.
Customer service oriented with excellent analytical skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform thorough routine eye inspections.
Perform pre- and post-operative checks.
Identify the patient’s visual acuity, field of vision, and hand-eye coordination.
Diagnose sight problems, such as nearsightedness and color blindness.
Prescribe corrective lenses and medications.
Refer patients with ocular pathology and/or surgical needs to ophthalmologists as indicated.
Maintain accurate medical files for all patients.
Promote eye health by teaching patients about proper eye care techniques.
Identify and assess eye defects and diseases commensurate with skills and scope of practice.
Record all diagnosis and treatment plans, including referrals and therapeutic prescriptions.
Provide call coverage in rotation with all physicians.
Perform some administrative duties as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Doctor of optometry (O.D.) degree.
Must possess a North Carolina Optometry Board license.
Completion of a one-year ACOE accredited residency program, preferably in ocular disease.
A minimum of 2 years’ experience as a practicing Optometrist.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have the ability to sit and stand for long periods, ability to walk. Individualmust possess visual and auditory acuity for patient-care assessment activities and timely response. Must have the capability for occasional overhead and low reaching. Must have physical strength for equipment needs in patient-care activities. Must be able to move quickly in response to patient needs. Must have the ability to occasionally respond to disasters, emergencies, actual events, or drills
