Full Job Description

Akin Brooks Engineering is seeking a Mechanical Engineer with three to four years of experience designing building mechanical systems for higher education, healthcare, institutional, and similar facility types. The ideal candidate will have experience with HVAC and controls systems; experience with plumbing and fire protection systems is also desirable.

This position offers the opportunity to work on renovations, system replacements, facility upgrades, and new construction projects in close collaboration with firm principals, project managers, clients, architects, contractors, and other engineering disciplines.

Key Responsibilities

Design HVAC, building controls, plumbing, and/or fire protection systems for institutional facilities
Perform heating and cooling load calculations, ventilation calculations, equipment selections, and system sizing
Develop construction drawings, specifications, schedules, details, and engineering calculations.
Evaluate existing building systems and participate in field surveys to document existing conditions
Assist with the development of design concepts, technical recommendations, and opinions of probable construction cost
Coordinate mechanical designs with electrical, architectural, structural, civil, and other project disciplines
Review applicable building codes, energy codes, healthcare requirements, and institutional design standards
Participate in project meetings with clients, design teams, contractors, and facility personnel
Provide construction administration services, including reviewing submittals and RFIs, conducting site observations, preparing field reports, and assisting with punch-list inspections
Support projects from initial assessment and design through construction and project closeout
Manage assigned tasks to meet project schedules, budgets, and quality standards

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering
Must reside within 150 miles of Gainesville, Florida
Three to four years of relevant mechanical building-systems design experience
Experience serving higher education, healthcare, institutional, government, research, or similar facility-based clients
Experience designing HVAC and controls systems and/or plumbing and fire protection systems.
Working knowledge of applicable mechanical, plumbing, energy, and fire protection codes and standards
Experience preparing engineering calculations, equipment selections, construction documents, and technical specifications
Proficiency with Revit and AutoCAD
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to coordinate effectively with clients, consultants, contractors, and multidisciplinary project teams
Ability to manage multiple assignments while maintaining attention to detail and meeting deadlines
Ability to visit project sites and assess existing building conditions

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with renovation projects in occupied or operational facilities.
Familiarity with healthcare design requirements and higher education campus standards.
Experience with building automation systems and controls sequences.
Experience with HVAC system assessments, commissioning, or construction-phase services.
