The Apprentice assists licensed electricians in installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems under supervision. Responsibilities include learning to read blueprints, preparing work sites, handling materials, troubleshooting issues, and following all safety codes. The role combines on-the-job training with classroom learning to develop the skills needed to become a fully qualified electrician. The role demands a blend of technical skills, safety consciousness, interpersonal abilities, and adherence to company policies.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Electrical & Technical Support
- Assist with installation of electrical components, wiring, transformers, conduit (EMT), and controls
- Support troubleshooting and repair of electrical systems
- Pull, cut, phase, and terminate wire safely and properly
- Read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, PG&E drawings, and technical documents
- Learn wire sizing, voltage/current requirements, and code-compliant installation practices
Tools, Equipment & Installation
- Safely use hand tools, testing equipment, tape measures, and bending tools
- Dig trenches, install conduit, and perform general physical labor
- Operate job-site trucks and equipment after proper training
- Perform pre-use inspections on tools and equipment
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all County, Utility, and customer electrical safety codes
- Wear and enforce proper PPE at all times
- Ensure all electrical connections are properly secured
- Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free job site
- Perform DOT inspections on designated vehicles
Logistics, Materials & Site Support
- Assist Foreman with gathering materials and preparing parts lists
- Load/unload trucks and transport tools and equipment
- Restock materials in the shop after job completion
- Maintain inventory, supplies, and equipment readiness
Vehicle & Equipment Care
- Clean, restock, refuel, and prepare trucks and equipment daily
- Perform preventative maintenance (check DEF, water, supplies, etc.)
- Assist with trailer hook-up, towing, and pre-trip inspections
Documentation & Reporting
- Accurately complete materials tracking and job-related paperwork
- Assist with data collection as directed by Journeyman Electricians
Learning & Development
- Participate in classroom and on-the-job training
- Follow instructions carefully and demonstrate steady skill growth
- Show initiative by preparing for next tasks and anticipating job needs
- Enroll and attend ET classes
Technical & Physical Requirements
- Mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity
- Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs. unassisted
- Capable of standing, kneeling, climbing, and working in tight spaces or at heights
- Comfortable working indoors and outdoors in varying conditions
Experience
- Prefer industrial or agricultural electrical experience
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid driver’s license required; must maintain an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to operate company vehicles and tow trailers
- Must complete all required safety and operational training
- This is a mobile position requiring regular travel to customer locations; employee must be able to legally operate a company vehicle
- Must be insurable under the company’s insurance policy; proof of insurance may be required
Qualifications & Requirements
- Proficient in English (reading, writing, and speaking) to effectively communicate with customers and team members, complete service reports and required documentation, interpret safety manuals, and follow equipment instructions.
- Ability to understand and comply with all safety procedures and applicable DOT regulations.
Experience
- Previous experience or coursework in electrical work is preferred but not required.
- Familiarity with high voltage systems, low voltage systems, and basic electrical concepts is a plus.
- Exposure to construction site environments is beneficial for understanding job site safety and operations.
- A willingness to learn from experienced professionals and take on new challenges is essential.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work as part of a team are important traits for success in this role.
