A Journeyman Electrician is a skilled field electrician responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and testing electrical systems in accordance with applicable codes, customer specifications, and company standards. The Journeyman applies sound technical knowledge, advanced diagnostic skills, and safe work practices to complete projects efficiently and with a high level of quality.
This position works under the general direction of a Master Electrician or Project Manager and may provide day-to-day leadership, training, and oversight to one Apprentice Electrician or Helper. While the role includes limited supervisory and job coordination responsibilities, the Journeyman remains actively engaged in performing hands-on electrical work.

Key Duties & ResponsibilitiesElectrical Installation & Technical Work
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and test commercial, industrial, and utility electrical systems.
- Install electrical equipment, transformers, switchgear, panels, conduit (EMT, RMC, PVC, and other raceway systems), controls, and associated components.
- Pull, phase, terminate, splice, and test conductors in accordance with applicable electrical codes and manufacturer specifications.
- Diagnose electrical issues using appropriate testing equipment and implement effective corrective actions.
- Read and interpret blueprints, one-line diagrams, wiring schematics, specifications, utility drawings, and technical documentation.
- Calculate conductor sizing, conduit fill, voltage drop, overcurrent protection, and other code-required electrical installations.
- Verify installations meet all applicable National Electrical Code (NEC), local jurisdiction, utility, and customer requirements.
Leadership & Job Coordination
- Provide day-to-day direction and mentorship to Apprentices and Helpers.
- Assign work tasks consistent with crew member skill levels.
- Monitor workmanship to ensure quality and code compliance.
- Coordinate daily activities with the Master Electrician, Project Manager, customers, and other trades.
- Assist in maintaining project schedules and resolving field issues.
Tools, Equipment & Installation
- Safely operate hand tools, power tools, testing instruments, conduit benders, lifts, and other job-site equipment.
- Perform conduit installation, trench work, equipment setting, and related construction activities.
- Conduct pre-use inspections of tools, vehicles, and equipment.
- Operate company vehicles and equipment in accordance with company policies and applicable regulations.
Safety & Compliance
- Perform all work in accordance with OSHA, County, Utility, customer, and company safety requirements.
- Consistently wear and enforce appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Follow Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), energized electrical work procedures, and other required safety protocols.
- Maintain clean, organized, and hazard-free work areas.
- Conduct vehicle inspections and DOT-required inspections, when applicable.
- Immediately report safety concerns, incidents, and near misses.
Logistics & Material Management
- Review project plans and assist in developing material and equipment requirements.
- Coordinate material deliveries and maintain adequate job-site inventory.
- Load, unload, transport, and secure tools, materials, and equipment.
- Maintain accurate inventory of assigned vehicles and trailers.
- Restock shop inventory following project completion.
Vehicle & Equipment Care
- Maintain assigned vehicles, trailers, and equipment in safe operating condition.
- Complete daily inspections, cleaning, refueling, and preventative maintenance checks.
- Assist with trailer hook-up, towing, and pre-trip inspections as required.
Documentation & Reporting
- Complete daily work reports, material tracking, testing documentation, and project records accurately and on time.
- Document field changes, deficiencies, and completed work.
- Communicate project status and field conditions to supervisors.
Professional Development
- Maintain current knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), local codes, and industry best practices.
- Participate in company training and continuing education programs.
- Mentor Apprentices by sharing technical knowledge and promoting safe work practices.
- Continuously develop advanced troubleshooting and leadership skills.
Required Skills & QualificationsTechnical & Physical Requirements
- Thorough understanding of electrical theory, construction methods, and troubleshooting techniques.
- Ability to safely use electrical testing equipment and installation tools.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, specifications, and technical documents.
- Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds unassisted.
- Ability to stand, kneel, climb ladders, work in confined spaces, and perform work at heights.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather and job-site conditions.
Experience
- Completion of a recognized electrical apprenticeship or equivalent combination of education and field experience.
- Demonstrated experience performing electrical installations, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Experience leading or mentoring apprentices is preferred.
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid Journeyman Electrician license where required by state or local jurisdiction.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to legally operate company vehicles and tow trailers, as required.
- Must successfully complete all required company safety and operational training.
- Must be insurable under the company's vehicle insurance policy.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred (or ability to obtain).
- CPR/First Aid certification preferred.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Proficient in English (reading, writing, and speaking) to effectively communicate with customers and team members, complete service reports and required documentation, interpret safety manuals, and follow equipment instructions.
- Ability to understand and comply with all applicable safety procedures, electrical codes, company policies, and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
- Demonstrates professionalism, reliability, strong work ethic, and a commitment to quality workmanship and customer service.
