Position Summary
This position is designed to support a variety of Neighborhood Place of Puna programs based on organizational needs. Team members may assist in family shelter operations, mobile resource services, or community outreach efforts. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys variety, fast paced environments, and building relationships.
This position builds trust through presence, empathy, and respect, working to reduce barriers to safety, stability, and housing.
Requiring strong communication skills, a deep understanding of community resources, and a passion for enhancing the well-being of individuals and families in the community. Due to the dynamic nature of this role, candidates must be flexible with their schedule, including the ability to work varying shifts, evenings, weekends, or respond to emerging program needs as required.
Shelter Monitor - Summary of Duties & Responsibilities include the following:
- Monitor shelter participants to support safety, well-being, and compliance with shelter expectations while responding appropriately to participant needs and behaviors.
- Maintain site security, cleanliness, sanitation, visitor protocols, shelter logs, and accurate documentation of shift activities and incidents.
- Provide compassionate, Housing First–focused support by connecting participants to resources, collaborating with leadership, and attending required staff meetings.
Mobile Community Outreach Navigator - Summary of Duties & Responsibilities include the following:
- Coordinate community, site, and school visit schedules with staff and community partners while supporting program operations and participant engagement.
- Maintain MFRC vehicles, inventory, and supplies to ensure cleanliness, organization, security, and readiness for participant use.
- Assist participants with intake, referrals, resource navigation, technology support, and timely communication while maintaining accurate documentation and records.
The Family & Youth Outreach Specialist - Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct street outreach to unsheltered families and youth across East Hawai‘i, including rural and hard-to-reach areas, while providing immediate access to basic needs and support.
- Assess participant needs and connect individuals and families to shelter, housing navigation, case management, and community resources through coordinated referrals and warm handoffs.
- Document outreach services and participant progress accurately while using trauma-informed, harm reduction, and de-escalation approaches to promote safety and stability.
General Expectations and Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with community agencies, members, and organizations to build knowledge of available services and resources.
- Maintain a professional, respectful, and customer-focused approach in all interactions.
- Communicate clearly, listen actively, and document all relevant work activities and interactions in a timely manner according to company requirements.
- Follow training, NPP policies and procedures, program requirements, and direction from leadership.
- Participate in organizational planning, attend staff meetings, trainings, and community meetings as directed, and keep the shared calendar updated with activities and schedules.

Car Use:
The position requires operating a company vehicle and/or personal vehicle to transport goods or personnel to various locations as needed. A valid HI driver's license and a clean driving record are required for this role.
Education and/or Experience:
Preferred: Associate Degree or higher
Required: High School Diploma or equivalent, along with 1 year of experience serving vulnerable and challenged individuals and/or community engagement.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Excellent computer literacy and knowledge of Microsoft Suite, Google Docs, and Google Sheets.
- Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with participants, staff, and community members.
- Knowledge of available community resources.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and adhere to deadlines.
- Proven organizational and planning skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team and maintain flexibility around task assignments.
- Ability to establish, recognize, and adhere to appropriate professional boundaries.
- Proven in providing direct service to families and/or individuals.
Other Requirements:
- Valid Hawaii driver’s license and no-fault car insurance.
- Resident of East Hawaii Community required.
- Criminal Record and/or DHS-CWS background check
- Participate in the upkeep of office and general cleanliness of workspace

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Neighborhood Place of Puna’s Coordination Center / Family Resource Center assists people experiencing homelessness and other challenging circumstances. It is not uncommon to see, engage, or be confronted with the following: violence and threats of violence; profane, racists and/or sexist language; bodily fluids; conflict; interactions with First Responders; alcohol and other street drugs; cigarette smoke; death of service participants; nudity of service participants; people involved with sex work; people involved in the drug trade; persons used against their consent, will or knowledge; people in conflict with the law; and/or other situations that may be unsettling. Measures are taken to train staff to deal with these situations appropriately.
Pay: From $24.01 per hour
